So...the ACC still isn't very good at football...

FSU is back. Their recruiting, ACC schedule will ensure they go 9-3 at minimum 8 of 10 years. The only way they slip once or twice a decade will be if they get Jeff Driskel at QB. Florida plays in the SEC that is different than the ACC.

You're assuming the culture, Jimbo's enabling, boosters, possible rape, BB guns, and local police issues - don't comeback to bite them in the arse.

... is it?

This week's top 25 conference breakdown:

SEC: 6 (43% of the conference)
Pac-12: 6 (50%)
Big XII: 5 (50%)
B1G: 3 (21%)
ACC: 2 (14%)
IND: 1
CUSA: 1
AAC: 1

What's even worse is that the 2nd ranked ACC team is 24th (Clemson). This league is pretty much back to where it was during the 90s: Florida State and everyone else.

Not sure why a league that has schools in recruit-rich states like Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida under-performs so consistently.

Not that we're pulling our weight in any way, but it's disappointing. The 90s Big East was better, honestly.
Notre Dame would help. If they came in, the ACC might possibly also pick up another name brand football team.

They ain't entering as a full member anytime soon, if ever.

If Clemson hadn't played, and lost to, Georgia the opening game they would be a second ACC team in the top 15. If you're going to play one of those big OOC games early you had better win or else it just kills you. But no doubt that VT and UNC turned out to be huge disappointments.

Yeah and VT beat OSU ... the B1G is the most overrated entity in college sports.

Eh, kinda. Obviously FSU won the title, so that was great. And Clemson scored a BCS bid and finished 8th. So the ACC looked good at the top.

But the ACC had just one other ranked team: Duke at 23.

The breakdown of the final 2013 rankings by conference was:

SEC: 7
Pac-12: 6
B1G: 3
Big XII: 3
ACC: 3
AAC: 2
Ind: 1

There's just no ranked depth to this conference, as IB alluded to.
Right, but it seemed more competitive last year is all. Big 12 and 10 always seem similar like that. Top heavy.

Downer Post.

Truthful post.

Don't worry, the ACC got its grant of rights and TV contract. My post read by 50 people on a message board won't weaken the foundation of the conference.

I'm not saying there's no chance that happens, but if you told me five years ago that FSU would win a national title I would've thought you were crazy. They could barely stay in the top-25. Point is, a lot can change in a couple years.

They are better than the B1G in hoops and football ... good enough for me because they will never be the ACC.

Well, sure, if you want to set the bar really low.

We could have stayed in the American and been better than the B1G.

;)

I agree with you.

Your post will have no impact on the ACC or our fan base.

Honestly. It is a truthful post and interesting but really doesn't matter. It mattered when we were in the Big East and it sucked b/c there was the possibility of losing the BCS and/or defections to another conference. Now we're stable. I act don't mind the ACC being a non powerhouse. We aren't a powerhouse so the road back to 8 wins should be easier and won't impact us at all if the conference, as a whole, is down. Not like we're going to be the 5th team left out of the playoff.

Its about perception and not setting the bar anywhere ...

Why? Florida State was down because Bowden got old and his loyalty to his family hurt him. I always consider FSU a NC contender they are a national program. Florida State is an SEC team in the ACC. Luckily Clemson under Dabo has raises its game and the Coastal is bound to improve.

Correct.

Just a topic for a message board.

Still, it would be nice to see our new conference perform better. I'd like to see SU be a part of that, obviously.

The sample size so far this year is inconclusive in my opinion.

The Big Ten has had problems. The Big 12 is a wild shoot out that affords very little guidance. The Pac 12 is nearly the same as the Big 12 and the SEC is hard to gauge at this point.

To me, rating the conferences on the basis of five or six weeks is pretty hard to do.

We are in a great situation. I think most are very pleased with our ACC affiliation.

I don't necessarily disagree, but right now, as of today, the ACC's performance this season has been underwhelming. And since there are only 3 teams left in the ACC that have less than 2 losses, the chances of teams climbing high into the top 25 becomes less likely.

I'm not commenting on our situation or that I'm not happy being in the ACC. It sure as hell beats the alternative (hi, UConn). Like I said, would just like to see this conference do better. It makes being in a conference more interesting when it performs well.

I understand, but I think it's way too early to draw any firm conclusions.

True. But I was also referencing last year too. The 11 bowl teams were a nice talking point, but the conference only had 3 top 25 teams. That was well below the Pac-12, a conference I think the ACC should be at least as good as in football given our geography, history and population.

I know, it's cyclical, so things can and will change. Just want the ACC to be well regarded as we start the playoff era. We're not off to a great start.

Coaching in the ACC isn't very good. The league is recruiting talent but they coaches aren't developing the talent. The league needs to get some better coaches. UL had a good coach in Strong and let him go to Texas. We need some young exciting coaches to enter the league.

This has been my thought. The talent is there. The ACC is right behind the SEC in terms of top ranked recruiting classes, and getting their players drafted on an annual basis. The coaching is a step behind the other conferences (not including B1G, which imo is worse). B12 has some of the best coaches in the country. All the schools (even Iowa St) are fully committed to football. B1G, and Pac12 almost to a school has made huge investments into their football programs in terms of facilities and coaching. The TV money is really coming into play there. The ACC has yet to do the same.
