So what was Red doing all those years under JB?

Serious question: do most head coaches delegate in-game coaching to assistants in basketball?
I don't think it's "delegation" so much as it's "collaboration." Delegation is probably rare. The only time I've seen it is with UConn when Calhoun would sometimes stand back and allow George Blaney to draw up plays and lead the huddle in certain situations. Which, as much as I hate them, spoke volume about their trust and relationship.

Obviously the head coach is the shot caller, but with most programs, you at least see the assistants and head coach talking and engaging throughout games. With SU under JB, it always felt like there was an understanding that during games assistants should just keep their physical distance.

I'm confident that Autry is incredibly knowledgeable about basketball. Like, extreme expert level knowledgeable.

I am sure he sees things on the court that only a tiny fraction of people can see. I am sure he has tremendous insight into what someone needs to do to become a successful basketball player.

I am sure he has a very strong grasp on what it takes for a college program to be successful. And I'm sure he's articulated that to folks at SU.

The problem is that all of that knowledge -- which, again, I'm certain he has -- just isn't translating to the way he's running the program. I couldn't begin to explain why. But it's evident that's the case.

Sometimes very smart, very accomplished people just aren't capable of running the show. I've seen it in my professional career many, many times.

This is why it’s critical to get someone who’s proven they’re a program builder, who’s won as HC before. Trying to get Murray from UConn or another assistant comes with much mire risk than someone like Hodgson does. With the next guy he has to have proven he can win as a HC
