Soak this in... (Baylor UW)

I'm sure there would be some upset people, but I also think you can improve your defense quicker than you can improve your offense. I remember that last game against UConn 2009, we lost 56-31 I think? But we had 500 yards, it was the 2nd game of our assumption that Spence had been removed from calling the game and Marrone was doing it. So while there was certainly special teams concerns, some defense concerns stopping the run, I didn't think it was a meltdown on the board (outside of people being upset with Edsall). I remember people being excited about where our offense was going to go under Marrone.

This is 100% correct. In fact I vividly remember being surprised at how generally upbeat people were after that loss. It was because our O moved up and down the field with ease, and we had hope deep into the 4th quarter, along with optimism that good O was on it's way back to SU.

But we shouldn't let reality get in the way of a hypothetical.

I was laughing at that game, because both defenses were so inept. But I still prefer to watch slobber knocking defensive football over a joke like that. I have a feeling we'll get to see a couple more shootouts during the next week, before defenses come to the fore in the BCS title game.

People certainly have the right to prefer whatever style they like. But as it relates to SU, we will never, ever have the athletes and depth it takes to have an LSU or Alabama-type D. But we could build a system to have a great O.

Which would be fine, if what we got to watch was slobber knocking defensive football.

Sadly, our best player on offense was a slow footed tight end. We're just a boring football program at this point. Hopefully we start recruiting better and the staff implements an offense that suits a fast indoor venue.

the average YPG for all 120 teams is 392. Average NFL YPG is 345.

college std dev is 65. NFL std dev is 45.

I think a lot of SU fans watch SU and NFL games. understandable, how much football can a normal person watch?

if you're primarily an NFL guy, you'll think SU is normal. "345 yards? that sounds about right, right?"

if you're a college guy, you'll see that the average is way higher and there are a lot more volatility so a lot more crazy games

I was at the game last night...wow!

Shaking my head as this was happening in a Dome and wishing we could have these type of circus show in the Carrier Dome. BTW, Baylor (a private school Cuse's size) traveled great to the game. There had to be about 45,000 Baylor fans. Of course most of their fans live within 5 hours of the game. Washington traveled about 6000.

For Tomcat...Baylor had BCS level Tuba staffing. Although I think they are noted as a music school.

I like our approach on defense. Find the most athletic guys you can, and play an attacking, blitzing style. Try to force the offense into mistakes. Yeah, you'll get burned, but as guys get more experienced, they get more aware, they get burned less, they'll force mistakes/turnovers more.

Work towards a dynamic, dictate the game, type of offense (especially in a Dome obviously and now moving into a league with very few bad weather sites), and you would think this could take off. Marrone previously talked of an attacking offense, so let's just hope he's too nervous with what he has and is still planning to get there.

Oh, and obviously, need to do something about special teams. Dedicated, experienced coordinator would be a great start.

agree about the defense. recognize that you're going to have stinkers, (everyone outside the top 5 does, and even the top 5 does from time to time), yardage is going to be volatile, and do whatever you have to do to try to kill qbs and get turnovers.

Baylor competes against a much tougher schedule as well. If we played their schedule this year we would have won 2-3 games.

If we don't get it turned around in the next year we will be Duke's best friend in the ACC.

When you're sitting at Nassib's Heisman induction next year aren't you gonna feel stupid.

;)

We would not have won one Big 12 game not even against Kansas.

The circus was in town! I'll bet the DC's aren't too proud right now.
Yea, I'd say they don't feel too proud, they all just got fired per footballscoop.com

Washington: Sark announced minutes ago that Nick Holt (defensive coordinator), Jeff Mills (safeties) and Mike Cox (linebackers) have all been released.

It always bothered me when Coach P was here that we tended to have a conservative offense, even when the rest of college football was opening up. As a team in the northeast playing in a Domed stadium, we might have been able to reel in a heck of a lot of northeastern talent with a more exciting offense, and taken our chances with superior talent in the one late season bad weather game a year.

I'm wondering if "boring offense that makes no sense when you play in a freakin' Dome" is now part of the identity of Syracuse football.

Not really. Their schedule is tougher in name only. They played 6 teams this year that were either .500 or had a losing record. And 6 teams last year had losing records.
