Our rush D really isn't all that bad. In ACC only games we are 5th in the conference in yards per carry D. Since Liberty our worst number is 4.06 against BC. Last season we were last in YPC D in ACC only games (as well as 2016 and 2017). In 2018 we were 6th.

INTs we are 3rd per game and forced fumbles we are 2nd per game.

In QB rating D we are 5th. And passes defended we are 4th per game.

Sacks and TFL both are 10th per game which is so so.

Then we have 3rd down D where we are 14th. That is hurting us.

But here is a really good stat, Redzone TD% we are 2nd in conference. We have faced the most redzone attempts but we are keeping teams out of the endzone.

3rd downs have been brutal at times but I chalk that up to lack of pass rush along with Trill and Cisco being out.
Too much time for WRs to work with qb stationary watching it unfold. We're a couple dlineman away from being really good on defense.

I think since the Liberty game the run defense has gotten better. The LBs look more disciplined and are doing ok at wrapping up although the tackling is still inconsistent.

Getting more size on the DL next year will really help shore things up

out 3rd down D is hindered by no reall pass rusher, but also because we have so many young kids among the back 7 making small mistakes.. That can be corrected but so inconsistent.. the drop depth by the LBs really has hurt us a bunch of times.

had we just been Ok vs NC st on 3rd and 10+ they probably dont score 14 pts.. but when you are running your 8-9th DBs out there teams will find them.

I like the young D -they get after it.
Even with the miscues and 3rd down issues, SU's D is a LOT more fun for me to watch than the offense!
Hoping the experience gained by the young guys and some upgrades = continued improvement next season.

I just wonder how much of it opposing teams knowing they don't have to do much. A couple fgs and you're all set. Gergian.. they're alright but as the offense gets better, other offenses might be more aggressive

NCSU was very aggressive vs us. Two deep balls to NFL calibre wideouts aside, we likely win that battle.

Assuming that's what's happening, that would make our ability to turn the ball over even more impressive.

Yes, I get why we want to focus on that game but I'm talking overall

Thats fair. In my opinion its the same tale as last year with Louisville as this year’s outlier.

Defense performs well for most of the game. Dino’s offensive scheme gives the ball back to the other team. Defense gets exhausted. We give up points.

i think White’s done wonderfully despite the ineptitude on the other side of the ball. I hope he’s retained if/when there’s a transition in staffs.

We dont have the horses and experience in key areas. More importantly I see the adjustments from the staff and I see effort from the players even when they are tired. Like what every one else said, we have improved, pass rush and 3rd defense is really bad.

Good thing they are fun to watch, because they are on the field a lot!

I think the defense is still on the learning curve for the 3-3-5. We've seen improvement over the season even with underclassmen on the field. Portends good things for the Orange D next season!

TRUE!
-but the D seems to maintain what I think is a good level of intensity and effort under the unfortunate challenge playing lots of minutes. Inspired by their competitiveness and character.

Need to add in turnovers gained. What that shows to me is that they are an opportunistic defense that can be pushed around. They win their share of plays but in key spots the opponent consistently imposes their will, more and more as the game goes on. Understandable with a young defense in transition. Good scheme and play calls, kids getting better at executing, but physically behind the curve.
