Some Positive News About Our DLine

Chris Slayton is not a man, he is a monster. http://www.syracuse.com/orangefootb...yracuse_football_defensive_tackle_strong.html Hopefully he can make use of his strength and use it to his advantage in the trenches. Was my favorite 2014 recruit and I've been waiting to see him get on the field!

Coach D said on the radio the other day that it wasn't talent they are lacking in his room - just bodies. Going to be fun to see what that unit does.

I loved Slayton, was my favorite defensive recruit last season. To know he's basically the strongest guy on the squad already is ridiculous. He has prototypical NFL size, and apparently NFL strength as well. I can't wait to see him dominating the ACC the next few years. Kids gonna be a terror for us, I just wish he could have stayed outside, but we really need somebody inside and better him than Ron Thompson right now, as he's our best NFL athlete and he can destroy tackles.

Man the DL is going to be tons of fun to watch.

We have Chris Slayton as a REDSHIRT FRESHMAN who will anchor our soon-to-be young defensive line for the next 4 years...

While Zaire Franklin anchors our young linebackers

And Marquise Blair/Antwon Cordy etc. anchor our secondary

Edit: These players may not be ALL ACC talents yet this year. But I am extremely extremely excited about our defense for the foreseeable future.

Our D is young now, but they are going to be very good, for quite a while.

The stats are daunting ... most defenses that return a low percentage of starters struggle. Somehow, I like our chances this year. The D is going to give up some big plays, but they have 3 games to get their feet wet. Hopefully, by the time LSU shows up they've matured and can bring a little of the swag that last year's defense brought to the field. Slayton will help with that. There are experience concerns all over the place (safety, DL, LB's), and depth concerns on the DL. We need Blair to qualify. But Franklin's a stud, and overall I like the talent level.

With so many untested players backing up the D-Line, our O needs to function normally this year or we'll be asking for trouble.

I think he could be better, actually.

Slayton's an animal. I don't think his calm demeanor and behind the spotlights attitude will hold him back, but I'd love to see him develop the killer instinct that you see so many professional D Linemen have that puts fear in opposing offenses.

I can't believe that he weighs 290. Wow. That is some good news. I know we have not seen him play one down in college, but from his offers and high school talent, I strongly assumed he would be an early starter. Keep up the hard work Chris.

Old but a goody

I like this thread better than the usual

Billy Joe's Something something sports magazine ranks Syracuse last in the ACC with Wake forest!!!!

The DL definitely has some very nice prospects for Daoust to work with. Slayton, Clark, Pickard, Ealey, Sheppard. We're used to having Daoust make wonders out of nothing. Can't wait to see what he can do with some bonafide stud prospects.

So are we just gonna call Chris Slayton, Clayton now to save time? ;)

From what it looks like Clark has the same freakish strength too. They make take some lumps this year but our DT's are gonna be something special the next few years. Samuels, Slayton, Clark, and Cross. All will be freshmans playing together the next 4 years. Very excited about them.

Throw in the 3 Freshman DE's (Ealey, Pickard, Sheppard) and the DL has some potential.

Here's hoping that crew can avoid injury, because I think they'll prove more than adequate if we can keep them upright this year.

Raymon will bounce back. Samuels was the defensive MVP of spring ball. Slayton has the tools to be a great player for us. And Clark / Cross should provide more than adequate platoon depth, maybe more.

Provided we don't have ridiculous injuries a la the OL last year, I think the interior of the DL is going to surprise many.

I agree. We will surprise and like Anomander said, Daoust can get alot out of these guys. He will be relentless teaching his technique and have them ready to give 10-15 quality snaps per game. Yes, DE's are young and talented too.

I'm a little bit more hestitant about the DEs. I know that Robinson / Welsh were limited to some degree, but those guys were in great shape, they played hard every snap, and they made plays. They just weren't big threats to get upfield and make too many plays behind the line of scrimmage. But losing both of them to graduation is a blow--both in terms of depth and experientially.

I love Thompson. Can't wait to see what he can do as a full time DE. I think he's going to have the type of year that could catapult him into 2nd day NFL draft contention. He's finally playing the right position for us.

Beyond that--I have serious concerns. Simmons is a fifth year senior who hasn't done anything noteworthy to date. His biggest "accomplishment" was having HC Shafer compare him to Freeney last preseason. Can he generate some pass rush? Now or never.

Arcinega? Intriguing, but he's playing a new position. He's got the size, but does he have the tools to be disruptive? I guess we'll see. Would be a great way for he and Simmons to close out their careers [yes, I know that Luke got an extra year back from the NCAA] by emerging as solid contributors.

The rest of the guys are true frosh [correct me if I'm wrong about that]. Far from ideal. We have numbers, but are short on experience.

If Daoust can somehow cobble together a solid rotation at DE, the defense could be pretty freaking good.

Im hoping Simmons learned alot from the DE's the last few years and can have a Brandon Sharpe type senior year. Arciniega is gonna have to give us a pass rush atleast. He will be one of the more athletic guys on the edge. Pickard is gonna have to give us snaps too. Maybe he can be inserted mainly on run downs. This will be Thompson's last season if he has the type of year we all expect him to have

I forgot about our Conn boys Guidice and Ginnetti who are both going to be weight room warriors and blue collar work horse type players.

The one that is most intriguing to me is Carter. I am curios of his reporting weight as he was only 250 in HS. He had a reported 4.8 40 and kid looks like a reed in pictures. He has a ridiculous frame to build on. Also, there is something about the fight in the dog and these type of kids (Bromley) if given the opportunity and they buy in and take it, can become seriously amazing people.

Having all these guys listed here makes me more comfortable about our DL for the future as I forgot how strong our last class was for the DL. It still causes me to hold my breath for this year and would love to see 1 of NT DT and DE for this year. Possibly 2 to 3 interior next year with 2 DE's. I would love to finally see some depth in the DL which we have not had in a long time. Looks like OL will finally have depth after the recruiting classes of 14, 15, 16.
