Some Thoughts...

We did get those rushing yards but scored only 20 points and lost. The reason? Two turnovers, penalties and we couldn't complete 3rd down passes against a team that had given up 551 yards passing the week before.

I'm agreeing with that and probably in that order.

48th in YPG
102nd PPG

we just are not finishing and executing
Potential is tantalizing... stuff like that means if we put it all together and some team takes us lightly, we could pull a huge upset.

WVU vs. Maryland , Maryland played from behind. SU vs. Maryland , SU played from behind. Maryland got a bit lucky against WVU , The Orange didn't , but in both cases it was the defenses that caused the problem and forced the offenses to try to do things that were outside of their game plan.

Not sure SU got "outside" their game plan until after Hunt's pick six. The rushing totals are evidence to the contrary.

if it really changed how SU played, they wouldn't have punted so much.

2nd half Syracuse 21 runs, 9 passes if i eyeballed that right

it's just something people say "they fell behind and got out of their game plan" without actually paying any attention

it was not only the red zone offense that killed us. we got past the 50 almost every drive, but those times we had mistakes to kill us too. the drive that hunt scrambled to the 40 and got an offensive facemask that killed another drive. Play calling can only do so much. we had 2-3 series where hunt usually falls forward for first downs and he started sliding and we failed on the next play to get a first down didnt help. He ran too much and it masked a few other issues, i dont think we can expect to get 150 out of him when he cant really break long ones. the oregon QB would have had 250 with the holes Hunt had to run through.

but we have to use what works. we need about a 20% improvement in the passing game , some of that is play design/calls, some of that is not dropping the easy ones, and some is better throws. is one of each a game asking too much ? 4-5 more catches, 2-3 more first downs. move the chains and score.

It put them in the mindset that they were under pressure to score a lot of points , because it seemed that Maryland was going to keep scoring. Quite possibly , later in the season when the offense is more "seasoned", they will be able to handle those situations.

The numbers do not support your thesis. We ran 78% of the time in the second half. Hunt was very inaccurate in the 2nd and 3rd periods (4-15) so MCD ran more. I think it is as simple as that. Our game plan was always to run and we did more of that when we were down in the second half.

I was thinking of the pick6 , which was very unlike TH , he seemed to be forcing the action .
