Everytime people referenced Marrone and "life skills" I thought it was just a comment on his style, not on an actual formal program that orangetradition refered to in another thread.

Do other schools have a program like this?

Is this part of why people have been saying Marrone has to ease off the throttle on these guys?

I was just about to respond to your other post...

I'm all for the "development of young men" and all, but it shouldn't be Marrone's responsibility to teach these players what fork to eat with. I agree with you. The further we progress under the HCDM administration, the more concerned I become.

At some point, HCDM really needs to stop trying to imitate Coach Mac and become his own coach...

So there's, like, life skills classes? The kind of thing I imagine kids at boarding school in the 50s had to go to?

Do other schools do this? I get the point, but a formal program sounds so weird.

This is a good point. You also have to be able to adapt to the times and players who are living in those times. When you think about it, it's amazing all of these "older" coaches that continue to be successful and appeal to 18 year old kids. They've been able to adapt to changing times.

I'd like to see more "blocking and tackling" skills.

I like it as long as it is during the Spring semester. The players have little free time to be kids between practice and school. If they have life skills classes on top of that, I am sure it would burn them out.

I don't have specific details of the program, but i sat through a presentation by one of the staff members (non-coach). It's more of a leadership development program rather than a etiquette program. I have participated in a program with the firm that ran it for Doug, and they are excellent, but as I said, they weren't involved this year.

Scooch- I missed your comments on the other thread detailing your concern that a "firm" helped run the program. I think Bob Brotzky was actually in charge of the program that focused on leadership and teamwork and personal accountability. The firm is a local group closely affiliated with SU that runs similar programs in the corporate world. Honestly, I'm no DM cheerleader and I think having such a program for D1 athletes from widely divergent backgrounds is actually a good idea and it reminds me of the programs the NFL has put in place for rookies.

Got it, thanks.

If it's something akin to the various leadership and management programs I've been through in my corporate life then it's fine. Some kids will get something out of it, some will sleep in the back of the room, but it's not particularly onerous.

And if that's what it is, I think it's more weird for the coaches to be running it than a professional firm.

Was this outside firm terminated due to cost considerations, or did Marrone think he could accomplish the same thing "in house"?

Which is exactly what I thought and found interesting due to all the lack of leadership comments since the spring.

Life skills are what the apologists whine about when they try to explain-away marrone's horrendous coaching.

I'm cool with the program but based upon some things that have been happening off the field and in the lockerroom, its obvious several players are skipping those classes.

The life skills program is solid and something we should be proud of.

If your saying something positive then it must be be a good program. :D Just busting your chops

Would it appeal to you if you were a parent of a potential recruit??

You know i do bust Dougs balls a ton. Why because he needs to be held accountable. The guys does so much good it is unbelievable. He truly loves Syracuse and wants this program and his kids to do well. No question about any of that. The bottom line however is the bottom line and Doug is not without some major faults in my opinion. I have said this 100 plus times but my concern with Doug is that i feel he is close to arrogant. I dont want to go into details but suffice to say he likes things his way and i dont think that he is good at delegating. Anyway if he gets off to a good start he will get an extension. If not he wont. If he tanks from what i have heard there is a very good chance he will not be back for his last year. Im actually pulling for the guy and hope that the car wreck of this year inside and out will cause him to take a hard look at himself because if he can turn it around he could be our next JB

Geez kcsu, I've met a number of NFL and college coaches, and every single one has a touch of what you're calling "arrogance". It's a charcter trait necessary to get to that level.

Let that one go, seriously.

Honestly I'm not interested in pop psychology or someone's personality assessment based on meeting a guy twice.

Critique his coaching.

Do you think West Point has such a program?
West Point runs an actual leadership program through all four years of a kids schooling. They're training for a career as an officer in the US Army...the entire curriculum is predicated on learning leadership skills.

Fair. Scooch what is your assessment of Doug as a coach?

17-20.

In two years I'd like to see him at least be a 34-29 coach.

Also would like to see us score some ing points.
