change need to put their money where their mouth is.. Awful free and loose when it comes to spending other people's money. Not surprised as just a couple weeks ago people wanted donations allocated for other programs donated to football because well that is the way it should be because surely nobody cares about women's lacrosse!! Like I said, awful free with others' dollars

how much money do we have tied up in tim lester? if we have a big buyout for a guy in the top 40% of dIII, we have issues

I don't want donations for other programs diverted to football. I want SUAD money that is going to people like Giansante going towards FB assistant coach and/or support staff salaries. I want Doc Gross to pay market value for his FB coaches like he has paid market (and above) for first time P5 head coaches in Olympic sports. I want the SUAD to develop a better long-term approach when it comes to facilities upgrades so they aren't paying twice for something that could be done once.

It's Shafer's guy, his job, his staff, his career. If he thinks Lester can get it done with a whole off season to make the changes he sees fit and implement his offense than so be it. I am not gung ho on either of them. Lots of good coaches start out at d3 level as well. I never understand the d3 argument. I personally don't really care anymore.

Seriously this is all people have been asking for.

The real number out there that people need to find is football specific donations, where do we stand there? That will tell you what they are really working with and the ability to spend on building a better program. What people want takes money. Private schools who want to compete at the highest level of college football need big private donations. We can do it with smoke and mirrors here and there but I don't think we will ever be able to compete at the highest level of the ACC without mining some new donors at decent levels

Do we know for a fact private donations is what pays most of Gait's salary?

Private donations shouldn't be a major factor in the salary pool for a staff. Not saying this staff deserves it, but when the time comes.

I completely understand facility improvements needs to come from private donors, but not competitive pay for a coaching staff.

I also feel the Athletic Department should be responsible for spending the money to hire the right people to come in and raise the money (which sounds like they just did).

This is a great point. I worry that some think ACC money will just take care of everything. It definitely helps but fundraising is still vital

It's the only ever we will ever have any sustained success again. We need to find lightning in a bottle for 2-3 years and whether that coach stays or leaves it hopefully build back the donor base. Right now it's like trying to get blood out of a rock. I agree with most that is staff wont be the one.

It depends who you are trying to compete with. Donations go through the University but these donations at the big private football programs are most likely used to pay coaches in some capacity. Hell Auburn got a lot of the money to pay Chizik out from private donors

It's the American way!

I don't give a lot but I do make a charitable donation each year. I am not super wealthy but I don't have many obligations. However, I don't think one should have to give any money to ask if money/cash flow is why we couldn't make a change if we wanted to do so.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but we really don't know the length of Shafer's contract or terms of any buyout do we?

I think he made quite a leap. Fine with him as qb coach and interim.

We pay Shafer and his staff fair market value.

There's no way we can get the level of donations for a buyout. Which is why I don't really care anymore either. I just think if you promote from within, you should have the buyout terms really favor you, not the coach. What's he going to do, say no? No one else is offering him a head coaching job at the city that he has happily settled his family in.

The only thing I don't really agree with is the comment that it's Shafer's career and if he wants it to happen with Lester than so be it. The SU football program is bigger than Shafer's career. If we have an AD who is engaged in football (I'm not really sure) and he thinks this is a huge risk, then he needs to step up and make his opinion known. Even opening up the wallet to help with that situation.

I hope Lester is great, but we have a lot riding on him. As an ACC team we should always be relevant and attractive to coaching candidates, but I don't know how many times I want to chance it by burying our program in the bottom quarter of FBS.

I agree that he is paid fair market value.

I think the point that some are making (not the post you were responding to) is that you get what you pay for essentially.

If you want to go 3-9, you pay a coach $1.2 million...if you want to go 10-2 you pay a coach $4+ million and pony up for the staff accordingly. As well as upgrade facilities accordingly.

What SU is trying to do is catch lightning in a bottle and it is being played out in front of our eyes how difficult that is.

The most important thing is that HCSS will be back next year and all the negative posts in the world are going to change that. I hope Lester can get things turned around in the off season. If we go 3-9 again then we have to hit the reboot button once more, and give another staff 3 or 4 years. I can't even bear to think of that right now.

Why hire Shafer if his buyout is onerous? I'm fine with going cheap if you think you have someone good but there's no reason to pay him more than anyone else who wouldn't know as much about him. Shafer was fine at the time, they didn't have time to do it right but there's no reason he should have a contract that's hard to get rid of.

That is why I don't care anymore either because I know it won't happen because the university won't do it without some large donor ( Who probably doesn't even exist) or if he does he's wearing depends and drinking carrots through a straw, picking up a large part of the tab. In all seriousness, I think Shafer deserves 1 more year because he did go 7-6 last year. We have one decent season one really bad, if he went 5-7 last year, would be different.

With regard to Lester, I am just so worn out and don't care anymore to dicuss some fantasy hire at OC that will turn everything around. It's never worked before. We had 3 OC's in the GROB era, we had 2.5 in the Marrone era. The only success that we have seen is sticking with Hackett and continuing to build. Remember many wanted Hackett fired even the year we were pretty damn good on O. That should tell you something.

The only thing that this season has left me with is a growing feeling that I really don't care much anymore. It's just been too long, been having the same conversations on this board for 12 years now. I fully expect Shafer to be fired next year but he still should get one more year to dry and dig out

throwing at the wall doesn't work. defensive head coaches need to know what the hell they want to do on offense. you can't just go to and fro every year.

4 wide didn't work, let's do 2 TE. west coast didn't work, hey I saw a powerpoint about the pistol, ok no that didn't work, minnesota was almost good with 2 nfl backs, lets do that.

but if we're going to have a defensive coach with no idea what he wants to do, the least he could do is hire someone with SOMETHING we can try to delusionally hang our hat on

Sounds good on the internet.

So, if we give all of the coaches a raise we will win more games next year. ;)
