South Carolina hires Shane Beamer

AHC and TE coach at OU to HC in the SEC? I get the bloodlines but that seems a reach unless he is a super high potential guy.
I think they see him as a Dabo Sweeney guy. Dynamic personality. Being in the same state as Clemson, they are heavily influenced by their big brother.

Not sure how Hokie Mark or the rest of the VT fan base feels about this but to me, it is looking more and more like Justin Fuentes was a disastrous hire. If Shane kills it in Columbia, it will just make a bad situation worse in Blacksburg.

This was a risky out of the box move for South Carolina. Bold move. It will be interesting to see how it works out.

He was an assistant there from 2007-2010 and apparently did really well on the recruiting trail so I think they are banking on that continuing.

I wonder if they took a risk on a first time HC because of how much they still owe Muschamp.

(No clue where he was in his contract year, just speculating).

I’ll respectfully run counter here.

Seems to be a worthy gamble from my seat. First of all, South Carolina is a pretty good job, but hardly elite. So they aren’t going to have coaching legends lined up to take the job. He was going against Satterfield at UL and the spector that is Hugh Freeze.

But think about it, Beamer has obviously watched, played and coached under his father. HOF Coach. Good start.

He’s also learned from/coached under Bud Foster, Kirby Smart, Steve Spurrier, Lincoln Riley, Phil Fulmer (the coach, not the AD), George O’Leary and Sylvester Croon.

That has to count for something. And if he does well, it might last for a while. That family seems to value loyalty.

Time will tell.

If he does well there, maybe he goes home to Blacksburg. I know it would be leaving the SEC, but Columbia is the armpit of the south.

Yep they do which is wild because they laughed at him until he won a championship...

I think it's a reach at best. For every Dabo, there are 100 failed hires. Clemson hit the equivalent of the Powerball...

South Carolina has the toughest annual schedule in the country.
Clemson every non-Covid year
Florida
Georgia
Texas A&M
Every year.

That is only 3 losses in a good year for them.

They need good coaching to compete with their tough schedule.
They will get talent.

The fact that they didn't hire the coach of the 2nd best team in the state this season (that would be Coastal) is so weird to me.
He interviewed and Didnt get it. Might just be amazing year too but I think it woulda been great hire as well

As mentioned above there were a couple of reasons..

1. Boosters (who are probably writing the checks) really liked him

2. they thought very highly of him when he was there and he was said to be “the guy” that hauled in the programs biggest recruits while leading that department, Lattimore, Gillmore, Alshon Jeffrey, Swearinger and more

I agree on the "risky" part. South Carolina is where coaches go to end their career, not start it. I'm not sure this is a wise move for Shane or the Gamecocks - I guess we'll see.

As for VT, I think Fuente gets a pass on 2020, but he'll be under massive pressure to perform in 2021... if he does, indeed, survive next week (his buyout drops on Dec. 15th, apparently).

Lots of Hokies think the defense will benefit from having an actual offseason to practice, so they're willing to excuse that side, but they feel like the offense needs a new coordinator.

Fuente and staff also need to recruit at a P5 level (instead of just competing with G5 teams for players). I agree - Frank Beamer used to bring in 4-star players; Fuente is bringing in nothing but 3-stars.

If it a very hard job. If you beat your 3 OOC cupcakes, Vandy, and split UK/Tenn you still need to win one of those big 4 or the SEC West crossover. But if that crossover is Bama, LSU, or Auburn good luck. It is a job where a competitive 5-7 is a decent year.

That sounds similar to another program...

This sounds disturbingly familiar. Does Fuentes like movies and is his favorite cake Pineapple Upside Down by any chance ?

He was the OC at Va Tech when his father was the HC.

Fuente is totally the man for the Syracuse job! You guys should pony up the money - whatever it takes - to buy out his contract and get him to Upstate New York asap!!!
