I was going to put this in the "defense better than the 09-10 team" thread, but I thought it deserved a stand alone post. I have been less enthusiastic about this squad than most, and this kind of skewers my point of view.

I did this weekly last season, comparing the last two squads on a number of specialty stats. The 2010-11 team never quite got up to the levels of the 2009-10 team. Here is a comparison of this year's squad to 2009-10:

On everything except points in the paint, this year's squad is exceeding what the 2010 group accomplished through 11 games. I do think a point needs to be made about the huge bench points disparity - the 2010 team did not feature a token starter like Rakeem Christmas. If Dash Riley had started every game and then immediately sat vs every difficult opponent, to be replaced by Ricky or ARinze, the numbers would be similar.

All in all, though, this squad has put up impressive numbers. Draw your own conclusions.

Looks like we're either really valuing the ball or just limiting opponents' scoring opportunities after we do turn it over. Great to see.

Great analysis. I would be interested to see how this compares as the season goes on. Obviously the more traditional stats like steals and block are interesting to compare in this analysis.

I've always thought defensive rebounds as a percentage of total missed shots were also interesting, rather than the number of defensive rebounds. In other words, total defensive rebounds divided by the number of missed shots by the offense. It also refelcts when a team is hitting its shots. A poor shooting team that still gets its own rebounds reflects badly on the defense and I think that is the whole point of JB's defense: Let them take a low percentage shot and get the rebound. My sense is the '09-'10 team did a great job in that category; I would think this year's team is doing well too.

seems odd to me that opponents points off turnovers would drop by half while their fastbreak pts double.
if we're taking better care of the ball does that mean that they're beating the zone back downcourt?

We did see half a dozen of those on Saturday. State got a basket off Keita's first-half dunk and at least two more in the second half.

We have definitally had issues at times getting back even after made baskets. Not so much lack of hustle IMO but lack of awarness at times. This team has done a great job overall of valuing the ball, something that was a major gripe of mine last year.

I will say I am surprised at these numbers in comparison to the 09-10 team. I didn't think we would stack up as well even though I am high on this squad. This squad does have some things to work on defensively as far as rebounding, doing a better job denying the FT line entry pass, and covering the baseline cutter but I feel they can improve on all of those things. Overall our defense on the perimeter has been far superior to last season with basically the same players.

Offensively I feel we still have a lot of work to do as well.

The perimeter defense has been better due to the emergence of Dion (working harder and getting more minutes), and to a lesser extent the experience that Southerland and Fair now have as wing players. On the inside, you trade better shot blocking from the center, versus the better help from Wes and Rick (or really, better overall ability from Wes as a rebounder and shot-blocker).

On offense, this team may not have a lot of upside -- unless Brandon Triche gets going as a shooter. We aren't a top shooting team; we aren't going to get crafty post play from either center. The team will depend a lot on dribble moves from Dion, KJ and Scoop; the ability to get out on transition; and a team effort to get second chances.

Thanks for the efforts. You should remember, though, that Brandon was that token starter in 2010, giving way for Scoop. Also, Ricky and Kris Jo came off the bench for that team, and Arinze did not log 30+ minutes a game.

true, Scoop finished the games and logged more minutes, but BT averaged over 20 mpg for the entire season, including the NCAAT. That is not a "token" starter.

And, Ricky started at the 4 then rotated in for Arinze when he needed a blow. He wasn't a bench player.

Trice wasn't a token starter like Rak is, Brandon played 1 MPG less than Scoop.
