HCDM has said he plans to have a real game with the squad divided into two teams -- as Mac always did it. If you were HCDM, how would you divide up the teams?

I think they are going to have trouble putting two full units on both sides of the ball on the field. Is this something he has said recently or based on past statements?

If it's based on what he has said in the past I'd expect offense vs defense this year.

1st team D line
2nd team LB
1st team Corners
2nd team Safeties

vs

1st team O line
2nd team QB/RB
1st team WR
2nd team TE

and then reversed 1's vs reversed 2's

Strength vs Strength, ?'s vs ?'s

I'm so sick of hearing this. What is going on, if you are in year 4 and every damn year he doesn't have enough players to practice ???

He's bringing in a recruiting class of 20+ players this August.

Which means he's only got 61 returning players currently on campus. And almost dozen of those are injured.

Which leaves approx 23 healthy players for each squad, not counting walk-ons.

Hard to assign 3 TE's to each team when you only have 3 healthy TE's to begin with.

Overreact much, who said they don't have enough kids to practice?

Opps, I almost forgot who I was replying to.

Jesus, between graduation, a handful of guys leaving early, and injuries they are around fifty scholarship kids. Part of the graduating group were 4th year players who left with eligibility. That's a good thing, allows him to upgrade the overall talent level of the roster that much faster.

Yeah they could go split squad, if you want to watch a bunch of walk ons.

Based on what little info we have gotten from the practices, I think it only fair that we split the O skills like below:

QB Nassib
RB Smith
WR Sales

vs

QB Broyld
RB Broyld
WR Broyld

I think I know what this means:

QB Broyld
RB Broyld
WR Broyld

Remember two years ago when Buttgers offense consisted of direct-snapping the ball to their wide receiver lined up as a back???

... and then the entire package gang-runs up the gut???

You said it yourself just a few posts above, after reading Marrone's comments.

Have we not heard this every year so far ?

Ugh, two full units, as in two full offenses and two full defenses. They are short a couple of OL and LB's to make that happen. Doesn't mean they don't have enough kids to practice.

Fine. They are a little short of bodies to have a proper scrimmage.

Do you suppose that most other programs are also without as many players as they'd like to have at this time of year on such a consistent basis ?

What consistent basis?

Last year they had a split squad game.

We do have an inordinate number of kids injured and while I don't know what other schools injury reports look like I have to say based on recruiting class sizes that most schools are down to roughly 65/70 scholarship kids this time of year.

Those schools are doing split squad scrimmages but they have better depth and don't worry about injuries as much.

One difference imo is that our few walkons are barely D1AA level kids where as Big STATE U has 20 extra walkons that are probably better overall quality football players and thus they can fill out scrimmage rosters better.

I guess it's just me, but it seems that every year he's been here, we've been hearing that we don't have enough players - due to transfer, injury or getting kicked off the team. I mean, the articles are in the paper every year. Sure, some of it is just the nature of football, but it seems like we are always undermanned.

We are undermanned and with the infusion of the latest recruiting class in August should get the numbers back to where they need to be.

Marrone went his first two years with less than 60 scholarship players. The next class will finally catch us up.
