Damn well, guess you can delete my custis thread
On the surface, this seems like a weird move. Custis is our biggest and maybe our fastest receiver. I bet he has the best vertical of all the WRs as well. His hands aren't great and maybe he doesn't run his routes as perfectly as the staff might want. He seems ideally suited to playing on the outside.

But when the staff tried to use Nykeim inside last year, he was run off his routes routinely. I think he was just too small and weak to get through the traffic there, at least against the good teams we play that have a plethora of physical CBs to throw at us. Plus, I think small guys like he, Sharod and Sean Riley are hard to find and hit with passes in that kind of traffic.
When we have tried to get the ball to Jamel on the outside, he has struggled to get open.
Opposing defenses are not going to be able to defend the inside as easily with Custis charging through those inside lanes. The DCs at Clemson and FSU might need to pause and think about how they are going to defend the middle against the pass. The real question here is, can Jamel hang on to the ball on these kinds of routes? If so, this could be a great move.
I've never understood why it was assumed smaller recievers play the slot and bigger recievers play outside. Maybe he'll be more comfortable catching the ball on a different part of the field.
Having an extra TE sized guy inside should definitely be helpful on running plays or even to help protect the QB.Well said Tom. Custis and Ravian Pierce will be two big targets to stretch the middle of the field with. Perhaps this opens up the run game a bit as well.
Just a nitpick, my guess is that the concern is shoulder dislocation, not separation.
I laid a block shoulder first in touch football once. Not sure if separation or dislocation, but man did it hurt.Just a nitpick, my guess is that the concern is shoulder dislocation, not separation.
If it involved your collar bone it was separation. If it involved where your arm connects at the shoulder, a dislocation (or maybe subluxation). Separation is what you normally see when a a guy is driven into the turf shoulder first. Dislocation often occurrs with the arm in a certain position and it's forced too far, think a qb throwing and just as his arm is about to transition from backward motion to forward motion it is forced to continue rotating backward more than it should.I laid a block shoulder first in touch football once. Julian Whigam is great at what he does.

Mods - Any chance we could get him to do a Chat Session??Julian Whigam is great at what he does.
This is why it can make sense for him to be a slot guy.
A lot of quicker passes and if his routes aren't all that crisp it's still a bit easier to get open when you're more than likely faster than the man in front of you.
I think doing this now just opens up the playbook more in general. If JC is lined up outside 2 or 3 drives in a row - how does the defense react if he's in the slot the next time?
A lot of possibilities on paper - excited to see this new wrinkle on turf

I heard he is an absolute magicianWhigham is a national treasure.
I love the move of Custis to Inside WR. Could be that SJohnson is also forcing the move. Lots of reasons.
Babers has said in the past he wants to get bigger in the slot.
No. He is a student at Newhouse and an intern this semester at the PS.I like JW too. Like his delivery and energy and love that he is still around the program in this capacity . Did he indeed graduate from New
house?
I will never forget that violent hit he took at FSU and have always thought it was very cool that Jimbo visited him in the hospital that night.
GO JW!
