The biggest shock was that junior linebacker Marquis Spruill, who is coming off of an injury that caused him to miss spring practice, is listed behind redshirt-senior Dan Vaughan at outside (strong-side) linebacker, and not in the middle.

In another twist, true freshman Devante McFarlane of Half Hollow Hills West High School on Long Island apparently will start his SU career at strong safety. McFarlane, a two-way player and all-state linebacker in high school, was originally recruited as a running back.

I cannot fathom a situation in which Spruill doesn't start. He's too good not to be on the field.

Wow

Reading more of that article though, it looks like everyone coming off an injury is listed as second team (Lemon, Lyn, etc).

Coming off an injury, so he is listed at 2nd string. Eventually Daibate, Davis, and Spruill will be the starters. I've been hearing a lot about how well Diabate played in the spring.

Tear that DC up. The caution he put in there is for a reason. It will be updated tomorrow.

According to Nolan, it's from July 6. :D

The only DC that matters comes out Aug 25.

I don't care about him being second string, but why the is he back on the outside? Shuffling him around doesn't help anyone.

Yeah, putting him on there at OLB was the surprise, not which string.

But we'll see where his spot is today.

I don't think spruill played particularly well on the inside last year. If diabate can handle the middle we're a better defense with spruill on the outside. I love the move.

Phat i agree. Spruill seems like he is much better on the outside. Nice to have some options as he could always be moved back to the middle if required.

The idea of having Spruill and Davis blitzing from the outside is a nice thought. Agree that Spruill seemed to struggle playing in the middle. He was good in space and has good range. In the middle you need a guy who is looking to get hit on every play. Diabate made some great plays in the spring. There is room to get Lynch in too. The only thing that concerns me about moving Spruill is who plays the middle next year?

Everybody, dont panic. The staff will play the best players who are available and healthy. Take a step back and have some faith.

I am stoked about this D. Going to be a blast to watch and there will be lots of fresh legs shuffled in and out. They will be aggressive.

I agree...always thought Spruill was too light (assuming his roster listing is correct) to play MLB. I'm still waiting for that 230-plus smash mouth MLB that other teams fear. We haven't had one in a while. Does Glenn Young have eligibility left?

With a new LB coach, have to expect changes will be considered. I doubt anything is set in concrete with an early July depth chart.

We have a ton of potential on D but really need the LBs to step up. At this point we have no clue which 3 guys will start and where they will be (MLB or OLB). That is a little worrisome.

Agree with Phat, Spruill played better on the outside. I think he is bigger than his listed weight, but was engulfed by offense lineman too often last year, IMO.

I like Diabate, but he looks much more like a SS than a MB. I think he will have even more problems playing the middle than Spruill had.

Lynch at Mike??

Am I the only one worred about the LBs this year?

I think this move speaks to where the coaching staff might feel the strength of the line might be (NT DT) and where we might need some speed to close out on. By the end of camp look for MS to start over DV but don't be surprised to see a lot of shuffling in and out. I do agree that I think MS strength is playing the outside and using his athleticism to make plays. Personally, I think that the staff has gone deep 6 so that the can incorporate new schemes on both O and D and this is requires a lot of focus from the players. The staff do not want distractions and are demanding total focus, which explains the media black out also.

It is my assumption that they might be feeling on the Hill that this is huge opportunity to make great strides as a program at the national level; we have some legit depth for the first time in years, recruiting is picking up, the media push is starting to pay dividends, we have a schedule that is getting national recognition, and are moving to the ACC/last year in the BE. If we are able to make some noise this year we could pick up some major steam. Let's hope the team takes a page from the bball side and players are happy coming in as the "6th man" and providing major impact. Maybe just maybe we will have a shocker of a season and make noise like the 87 team who went 5-6 the year before. There are a lot of similarities and look where we went from there. I am not saying it will be that good but we have potential to make noise and were under the radar like the 87 team. Again, not saying we are going undefeated. Hold on for the ride and hope that it is going to be a grand one. This could be a fun fun year.

Northwestern has a USC transfer?

yup...another board member and I discussed yesterday that this defense could end up being the best in the big east this year. this team will be very fast and tough to block.

i think northwestern will be in for a treat

What's their QB situation look like?

First year starter who last year played some WR, some RB and some QB. Has been described as Denard Robinson lite. I think he was the QB last year (starter hurt) when they beat Nebraska.
