St Joe's comes to town this weekend for their season opener against the Orange.

The Hawks are led by a first year head coach, and have to replace a good amount of impact players from last year. But they still have good players, including their leading scorer from last year and a good goalie in senior Tommy Gross.

Offensively, the Hawks are led by Ben Dutton who scored 55 points last year on 47 goals and eight assists. The issue for St Joe's however might be assists, as they lost their leading passer last year and second leading scorer in Richi LaCalandara. No other returning player last year had more than nine assists. So, I'm curious to see how they move the ball. Will Dutton change up his game, or is their a new player ready to take the QB mantle?

Good news for John Mullen is that the Hawks did not face-off well last year, as their top FOGO won just 45% of his draws (he returns). That said, St Joe's rides like crazy. Opponents cleared at just 72% against them last year. They are stung in that department by losing their top LSM Levi Verch who led them in groundballs and caused turnovers. But still, it's something obviously that SU needs to prepare for, especially after last week's amateurish performance against the ride.

The big issue, for me, is the Hawk's goalie - Gross finished with a 57% save percentage last year, which is very good especially when you consider how fast the Hawks like to play. Syracuse really needs to shoot the ball better than they did last week as this is a real step up in quality. In addition to losing Verch, they also lost defender Ryan Bradly who was second on the team in CT's and their top SSDM. So hopefully the Orange can expose a bit of a re-worked defense in front of Gross.

St Joe's is unranked, but they should not be overlooked. I know scrimmage results shouldn't be treated with much weight, but it sounds like they outplayed Hopkins in a scrimmage a few weeks back, ultimately losing but winning the first half (typically when starters play) by a couple of goals. This team is tough and will certainly test the Orange. Syracuse needs to be ready. Hopefully they can play make-it-take which will help mitigate the ride.

Good stuff for sure.

Very interesting matchup on a # of levels. SJU losing Wray to Penn is a massive loss for sure though they hired internally so they have that going for them as far as continuity. They will also offer a very unique d matchup with two defenders at 6'6 and 6'5 respectively. Gross had a very good year last year and will cause problems.

Like BU they return a very good freshmen scorer but lost their overall top playmaker as you noted.

Tough to get a read on them as even last year they were a bit jekyll and hyde. Lost by two to Duke at Duke and then blew out Rutgers and Towson both on the road and beat Penn. On the other hand they lost to Sacred Heart (albeit a good SH team in the opener), lost to Umass at home, and lost to High Point twice.

Appears they lost 2 of their top 3 scorers in Lacalandra and Watters though they do bring back their top Assist guy from the midfield.

I think it's clear much like vs BU SU has to be better in the clearing game. They got away with some major issues in the clear game vs BU that I am not sure they will against most of the teams on their schedule.

I also worry about the fogo depth behind Mullen. While he certainly couldn't get into any sort of rhythm it wasn't the performance you were looking for from Drew Angelo. Roster cap considerations likely played a massive role but only bringing in 1 FOGO this past offseason will haunt this team if Mullen gets hurt or just has a game where he doesn't have it. Angelo so far in again limited draws is 6-21 when you include last year and the BU game. Captain obvious but that's not gonna cut it when Maryland is rolling three + guys deep at better then 50%.

Olenik is the only other FOGO on the roster and he likely needs a college weight program to get where he needs to be. Keep an eye on him as the season progresses

I watched some Hawks games last yr. Dutton is a beast as he put up 47 goals as a freshman. He did lose his QB in Lacalandra so not sure who will feed him this yr but he's also a very physical player. Wonder who they choose to cover him.

Dutton is listed 6"1 194, so hes probably 6 foot 185. I'd assume they go Fig first though with the physical element you could make a case for Dwan. Obviously slowing him down is gonna be a massive part of the game plan.

Wow I thought he was bigger. He plays bigger then he actually is. Fig looked so good last week I would like to see him on him.

Fig’s super power (and probably why he doesn’t get the same love as others) is that he can erase a player from the game off hedging and playing good off ball adjacent D, which can make him feel invisible at times as well.

I’d anticipate him taking on Dutton for sure to try and limit his touches. Fig is the best positional defender we have as well so I’d think he would do well enough when Dutton does get the ball.

Unless Hottle is hurt this is likely a typo by SU especially after the game he just had last week.
That's what I figured, wasn't sure if I had missed something with Hottle towards the end of the game.
