Stadium question

In the Chancellor's previous communication it became kind of clear what the University's preferred options are:
  1. New stadium
  2. Major Dome upgrade with a different roof technology
The Silverdome's new owners claim that they're going with a steel supported roof. I'm skeptical of their plans and wouldn't be surprised to see the venue be torn down. Previous speculation on this board is that the Dome cannot support such weight and there's no room around the Dome for the installation of new supports required for such a roof.

That appears to leave a cable supported roof as possibly the preferred roof replacement option. The most obvious example of such a roof is the Georgia Dome. To make that work, one would expect the addition of snow melting capability to be required. Perhaps a double fabric layer with blown warm/hot air could work with such a design as well.

Replacing the current roof with another air-supported replacement is the least desired option. It remains as the easiest, proven, backup plan.

I believe that the University's preference is/was the the new stadium plan that's been getting the attention of late.

And they seem to be more than willing to trade having an on campus facility for a state of the art facility that they don't have to pay a dime of construction cost for. Seems pretty obvious that they have also done the analysis that shows they are better off giving up the revenues associated with running it vs the expenses and opportunity cost of having that real estate tied up.

For the people who are going to pay for it, having it on campus is a non starter. People have to give up that idea if they want a new stadium.

IB- if the demo costs are brutal, just how valuable is the Dome property to SU? Just curious because it would seem pretty expensive to put something else on that footprint, wouldn't it?

Mass Demo versus Select Demo, huge difference. Talking about shoring and taking walls down for this and that, not tearing the whole thing down. The mass demo ( tearing it all down) will be expensive but select demo on that facility will be like pulling teeth, all concrete and reinforced CMU. All that concrete has to go somewhere, hopefully clean fill somewhere. The select demo for that facility when going to renovate will be a chore to say the least.

The Dome will not be easy to renovate to say the least, like I said. I think the new stadium will win out. I don't think it will be all that close either. I started my career working for one of national firms that focused on stadium construction, kind of cool starting out. Like I said, the complexity of a project like this, the resources, etc is mind blowing at times, however this stadium will be relatively straight forward for the right company. However, choose the wrong one it will be a disaster. Like I said, it should come down to 3-4 companies.

Now, I don't care if I build dog houses if it pays my bills

I'm fine with 44K. Fill it and make it something people have to want instead of thinking they can go anytime. It's funny how people react when you take away something, they seem to want it more.

As long as this gets done with the least amount of graft and manages to be able to be efficiently used by the teams involved I'm for it. If a stadium is built off campus and owned by someone else, is this a lifetime deal for SU? I guess I'm not sure how that really works.

How much room will there be for addition expansion seats or technology? Build for now and for the future because we all know that technology changes so quickly and having a stadium that can easily adapt to that would help save money and time in the future.

How much would it cost to put and permanent slanted roof (hard top) on the current dome? Not for football games as the new stadium would be used for that but for other sports or SU academics/activities?

You can play in Fenway with a partially torn up stadium...much more problematic with the Dome as you really only have early March to early September where it can be out of commission.

They did the renovations entirely in the offseason in several phases over 10 years. As IB said, the cost of that approach is probably a non-starter. I was just saying that it *could* be done, not that it makes financial sense.

Exactly, it can be done just what are you willing to pay and that IMO will be tipping point to build new and utilize the existing for new facilities

I love the Dome too. I especially love that it's smack-damn right in the middle of campus. But I understand the desire to reclaim that space for academic buildings, and the fact that the roof will have to be replaced. I wish there was a better alternative to moving off campus. But I really don't like the South campus location.

I am coming around to the opinion that the inner harbor location is the best spot.

So if they tear down the Dome, who here is buying a Ceremonial Pee Trough?

Rumor has it that the Fine Mess tailgate crew have dibs on a large section which they will convert to a large grill for cooking burgers and dogs. ;)

I would bet that AEG is consulted up front, meaning things like concessions, merchandise stations, etc will be very well thought out upfront as well as how to maximize overall flexibility of the structure to support more event dates.

There are a bunch of recent examples and lessons learned.

So if a new facility is built off campus does that mean SU can play an NCAA tournament game there since it is not on campus? If the facility had 44K seats they could also include a standing room area like in Dallas.

No, because SU will be playing all its' home games in the new place.

7 months in the spring/summer > 5 months in the fall/winter

the bottom line is they dont want to fix/expand/remodel it.

and by letting the city/county have it and the school rent it out...its a win for the school and a win for the city/county who think that kenny chesney & springsteen & etc...will each play there 10x a year every year.

Love info like this

So, the future holds for us a professional team playing under the title of Syracuse University that will be playing off-campus in a government-owned stadium? That'll be as appealing as the Syracuse Crunch are to the SU student body.

It's not going to be a government owned facility.
