If Stanford had won one of the two close road games it lost (at USC and at Utah), they probably deserved to be in the BCS title game over the SEC champion.

Against Top 30 teams, they were 6-1 this year. For purposes of comparison, Florida State was a mere 1-0, Ohio State 2-1, and Auburn went 4-1.

A loss against teams as mediocre as Utah and USC should disqualify them. They obviously played a tough schedule, but Utah is 5-7. No way would they deserve to be in if that was Their one loss. If USC was their only loss it would be an interesting question.
