I think the starting five is pretty obvious. Davis looks most assured of coming off the bench. Everything else I think is fluid…and may depend on game situations.
I think people are too easily dismissing Naheem. Bigs commonly look lost chasing smaller players. He’s going to be important playing against ACC bigs.
Historically, freshmen shooters coming off the bench are not consistent and I’ve not seen enough “other stuff” to think there won’t be nights where his minutes are limited.
Taylor looks like he knows how to affect a game without scoring…so I think he might get his chance.
Speaking of Chance, we’re going to get a look at him in the next couple of weeks. He’s a complete wild card. Anything we get here is gravy. I’m hoping for defense and intangibles.
Carlos really reminds me of a poor man’s Sherman. He’s in complete control out there and though undersized, makes winning plays. He doesn’t dominate the ball and he gets rid of it early when players are open. Smart smart player. We’re going to put the ball in his hands at crunch time and have him make good decisions.
JJ can fill the point when Carlos sits, but we weaken both guard positions when we do that. But JJ should have a very solid year.
A couple of area’s of concern: rebounding and go to guy.
Though we should be a better rebounding team, Lampkin doesn’t play above the rim and Freeman needs to get stronger. Davis is going to be pivotal here. But I can see nights where we struggle a bit.
As far as a go to guy. I think we’re going to set up plays for Bell, but I can see physical teams blanketing him and also giving Lampkin problems. The guy I think will have a physical advantage most nights is Freeman. Tough for a frosh to have this roll on a veteran team. I just don’t know how this will shake out. Some nights Bell is just going to go off. But we’re going to need random shooting nights from JJ Davis, choppa and Davis.
But overall, I really think this team is going to dance. There are lots of options offensively. We should be good enough defensively to get to 20-22 wins and get to the tournament. These early tournaments will tell us a lot.
