Former Syracuse standout and nine-year NFL veteran Steve Gregory will return to his alma mater to serve as a special teams quality control coach.

Gregory highlights the crop of four new quality control coaches along with Jesse Johnson, Bart Tanski and Joe Furco in joining the Syracuse coaching staff for the 2015 season.

So, what exactly does a quality control coach do? Schedule practices and support stuff like that?

Depends on the staff, but, they can be responsible for a lot. Film preparation and review, game planning, opponent breakdown, obviously on field coaching. Basically you assist position coaches and coordinators however necessary throughout the week.
A lot of times that's where you start to get on a staff with no coaching experience. He'll move up quickly.

awesome. Always loved the way Gregory played.

Good hire.

Oh, I see 2 of the other hires were Elmhurst and Central Michigan. Ugh.

Yeah, but we finally dipped into the Loras College cradle of coaches.

I understand why so many people dislike the "Midwest connection". Although, when you're trying to build a coaching tree, ideally your Assistants will be recycled every couple of years. Not necessarily Coordinators obviously, or, position coaches to a lesser extent, but, you do like to see Grad Asst's, and QC coaches as well as other assistants either move up or move on.

Wait... The announcement said "Special Teams Quality Control Coach". Does this mean we have a special teams coach? Finally?

I think its a great move bringing Furco in. He is a QB that thrived in Tim Lester's system. Broke many school records. He can give valuable knowledge and instruction to Hunt.

I don't know if he can or can't but that's assuming he's good at coaching and teaching what he was able to do.

That's the type of position where you find that out.

Only this board freaks about about who is named "quality control" coach. Can any of you actually list what they do without having to google the answer?

It's basically an entry level "lackey" job for those wanting to get into coaching. It's usually a step below a graduate assistant. Here's some of the "fun" things quality control coaches usually do:

  • help splice up game film
  • have the privilege of holding up play cards during practice, but usually for the skowt team trying to mimic the upcoming opponent's formations and plays.
  • holding clipboards for the coaches during positional drills
  • photocopying and stapling packets on recruits, game plans, etc.
My guess is Steve is truly helping with specials and doing some remedial tasks. As for the other guys...god bless them.

I hope he recruits. And then when's he's done doing that I hope he recruits some more.
We really need someone on the staff with a NYC background. If a spot opens up, it would be great to get Steve out recruiting for SU. We are not doing well in the city and that is a problem given it is producing more D1 players than the rest of the state. His background is excellent here as he is qualified to coach WRs, DBs and has special expertise in special teams.

But more than anything, I think he could help us recruiting. He is a very personable guy with solid people skills. I believe he would do for NYC recruiting what Coach Acosta has done for NJ recruiting.

His wife is from Little Falls, and is also an SU grad, which makes living here attractive to the couple.

His main job will be to to tell the team how he once returned a butt fumble for a touchdown.

this is a win/win.

like you said, its an entry level lackey job and instead of a 23 year old 'eric mangini' living at skytop while spilling mac & cheese on 1 ipad and slumming it a schine in a corner with another, we are getting a 9 year NFL vet, who likely has millions still in the bank and a lifes worth of football experiences to share as he trys to start his after-life.

this board freaks out because the quality control person didnt schlep chunky soup for a decade and theyve been exposed as never having rooted for, or even acknowledged him...and now hes on staff.

its probably the 1st hire SS has gotten right.
