Apparently Ishmael had knee surgery. He posted an instagram photo with his knee in a big wrap and brace. He said thankfully surgery went well. I was able to play the whole season with an injured knee.

Hopefully this isn't too serious.

torn meniscus per twitter.

Aren't there 2 different kind of meniscus tears? One where the meniscus is repaired and another where it is removed? I believe 1 is a much longer recovery time, no?

Recovery time is about a month, so this shouldn't affect Ishmael when he arrives on campus.

Good news. I expect Ishmael to be a big contributor this season.

Neither is really a big deal especially at age 18, kid should be fine by 5/1

Obviously Ishmael's not the same, but hasn't Derrick Rose missed almost the entire season after he tore his meniscus?

Looks like he will be all set come April 1. Rose had the ACL tear to the left and then tore the medial meniscus on his right. Whether they remove or repaired, repair the rehab can take longer. They probably tried to repair and I am sure with his history of knee issues they are trying to take every precaution.

Just an FYI, I believe Chandler Jones and T Roberts on the hoop side played almost an entire season with a partially torn meniscus. So it depends on the severity but it sounds like Ishmael should be good to go. Meniscal tear really not a huge issue to repair back to 90%, but Docs will tell you that it won't ever be the same. It just won't especially if you are a bit older and more of a distance runner or something, that is what got me

Doesn't recovery depend primarily upon how "deep" the tear is? My understanding [and this is a gross oversimplification] is that if the tear is less than 20% into the cartilage, then it can heal / regrow. If it is deeper than that, the meniscus is irrevocably damaged and will continue to chip away near the tear, so doctors generally remove it entirely to prevent that from happening.

Pretty much, some won't require surgery, some get repaired, some will be removed. removal is a quicker recovery but will cost you down the road, really lose the shock absorption. I have one removed and one repaired!
