Strickland needs fewer carries, was Howard's workload an anomaly?

Considering Howard didn't know where to lineup, I assume it was an anomaly.

I legitimately didn’t see that. Maybe I wasn’t paying close enough attention. I just saw him burst 8 yard run after 8 yard run behind the second string line when Wagner was specifically trying to stop him.

Howard passes the look test for sure, that much I do know. Put him in where he knows where to go. Running back #1 cant gain yards but knows where to go, Running back #2 seems like a solid #2, running back #3 gains yards but apparently doesn't know where to go. Howard knows where to go... where the
defense isn't.

use howard on mostly downs where its run or play action then, first lets have the oline block for anyone

someone can tell him where to lineup, i don't care

Strickland apparently also has the trust of the coaches for blocking assignments... when Dungey inevitably scrambles a dozen times a game anyway. I don't understand it either.

It was one appearance vs wagner.

Strickland succeeded vs Clemson And the U
ok but it's still pretty rare that a guy with this many carries has such a low yards per carry. the only other guy in p5 just grad transferred from bc to rutgers

I recognize your point, and its a good one. I’m going to reserve further judgement though until the playbooks opened up vs FSU.

For what it’s worth I believe he’d be the 2nd or 3rd best receiver on the team and he’s better receiving the ball in at least some space. I think Babers keeps him as rb1 due to big game experience, game knowledge and his senior status. He’s proven he belongs there imo but the talent behind him is increasing.

whew this thread.

- we don't run traditional play action all that much
- the system everyone was clamoring for, speeds up because the RB does some of the blocking assignment stuff because he's helping the QB and can see from that vantage point
- Efficiency is *the most* important thing to the offense, lining up properly for the RB is important - if he's not getting that right how is helping with the line calls
- Strickland was miscast from the beginning because the previous coaches sucked at recruiting
- Dino doesn't strike me as a coach who says "this freshman is good so I'm going to sacrifice 10 others things I want the offense to do that basically makes the whole system hum but at least we'll average 4 on the ground, also while burning a guys redshirt"

I don't think he's going to redshirt. I think he's getting a crash course so Dino can have his cake and eat it too. I wouldn't expect to see him against FSU, but I would expect to see him worked in against UConn and beyond.

If I'm wrong, then I'll enjoy watching him as a RB for 4 years after this season. So I still win.

Howard’s a beast. I rewatched his HS tape & some of his carries here, & he’s the quintessential “punishing runner” who loves to deliver a blow as he plows over some unlucky DB. I LOve that kinda back! Give him as many carries as possible, & he’ll be quicker to learn the schemes as well. Btw- his blocking is borderline illegal. Find him time...let him play!!

I don't know much about Howard, but I do suspect that Strickland is unlikely to be the kind of RB that Dino wants long-term for his system. He averaged over 4 YPC all of three times last year and also the year before. Two of those 6 games were entirely due to 1 run. In space he's good, but he so rarely has a burst through the line, and we ask our RBs to do a LOT of inside running in this offense.

We really do need someone to step up. Be great if it's Strickland, but not sure it's going to happen.

what are the 10 things that strickland enables us to do that won't happen when he's not in the game?

If Strickland wants to play in the NFL he should move to the secondary.
He could be an NFL player on defense. We could use him at safety.
If he wants to play offense fine I will root like crazy for him at SU but he won’t be a pro on offense.

I was exaggerating for effect, but here’s some stuff

- lining up properly
- understanding the communication from the sideline
- blocking
- understanding the line calls and communicating them
- blitz pickup
- catching the ball
- route running
- built up endurance to go tempo through multiple years in the system
- knowing when your QB is stopped for a loss in the red zone and coming to get the ball, run it in for a TD

To be fair, Moe does some of this stuff well and I think Howard will be able to - just not sure how far along he is. Looks the part and runs well. I have high hopes

i think we need to roll the dice. the best way to keep dungey in one piece is to find someone who's a better runner than him finally

That’s fair. Just don’t want to give up tempo and passing game.

I think we’ll see him at least for the 4 games, maybe more

Wonder how people would feel had the guy not finger tripped him on that last drive and he went 80 yds..

he showed burst/power he also had holes we didnt see all day so who knows.

I only saw one time lining up wrong on replay. a couplet times he was just standing looking for the plays and just had to adjust to whether ball was being snapped.

little too late for that
