Men's Soccer SU at NC State (3-0): Sun Nov 9, 6 PM [ACCT Qtrs]

That game is being played right now on ACCN.

The other schools that made the semis for the ACC tourney are Virginia, which beat UNC 2-1 this afternoon, and Cal, who beat Pitt today 1-0.

The ACC got 9 bids last season. Assuming they get the same number this year, I wanted to see if SU would be a lock to be one of the top 9 schools in the ACC,

We were the 6 seed, which bodes well for SU.

Looking at the RPI, SU was 9th going into today. The site says it includes today’s games but based on the record shown for Syracuse, this is not the case. The announcers just said SU went up to 30th in RPI after their win today over NC State. They thought they are now in but we’re not absolutely certain. Might be dependent on how many bid stealer upsets happen elsewhere in college soccer.

The ACC will get 8 bids this year. Nothing is guaranteed, by I think SU is safely in. SU is 7-2-1 over the last 10 games with an RPI of 30. SMU's RPI now sits at 10. We have already beaten them once. If we were to beat SMU a second time we would should get a home game for the first round of the NCAA.

The way the bias announcers were at the beginning you would have sworn SU had no chance at winning as they were talking up NC State as if they were the best team in college.

I mean, the stats were so impressive. Allowing only 4 goals the entire season is incredible. I think NC State's downfall was that they dont have a second goal scorer other than #7.

Neither do we
The difference for us (for better or for worse) is that our goals are spread out because Syracuse has no main scorer. Donovan leads the way for NC State with 14, and then it dips all the way to 4.

While Zambrano leads us with only five goals, many goals are coming from the defense and set pieces for Syracuse.

I think the game last night featured the two top keepers in the ACC. The NC State guy has a better save percentage but has faced far fewer shots than Tomas. Tomas has the most saves in the league and the second highest save percentage to the NC State guy.

They surely will be first and second team all conference. Hoping Tomas’ great performance is enough to get him the first team all conference nod.

Other interesting stats:

We have the fifth fewest shots of any ACC team
We have the third fewest goals
We have the fewest assists
We have the most saves and the second highest save percentage
We have the most fouls
We are tied for the fourth most yellow and red cards

SMU has the most penalty kick goals with six and they are six of six kicking them. We are 1 of 3. One of the keys in this game will surely be how disciplined SU is inside its penalty box. Can’t give them PKs..

The question I have is if we win the next two, How high can we climb in the NCAA seedings?

SMU’s RPI is 20th. Win that Syracuse could climb 5+. Virginia is in the top 5. Best them and who knows. Syracuse could get into the top 15.

I believe the top 16 teams get a bye in the first round, and a guaranteed home game in the second round. That is our best case scenario.

At this point, I think we’re likely to host at least one NCAA tournament game.

I don't believe that SMU will beat us. And I wouldn't mind Cal upsetting Virginia while we are at it.

SMU's RPI is 11. Syracuse stands at 30. I don't see them dropping much if they were to lose on Thursday. I think they would still make the NCAA's but would get a road game.

A win would put them in the lower 20's and give them a first round home game in the NCAA's. SU has come a long way just in the past few weeks. If memory serves me correctly their RPI was in the 60's after playing Cornell. It's the power of the ACC.

If the ACC tournament shows each year is that chalk rarely holds. 2022 was an unusual year when SU won the regular season title, the conference tournament, and the NCAA tournament. To win the conference tournament, SU beat 8th seeded Clemson.

Honestly, I don't want to play Cal. They do nothing for you. If SU was in the other bracket and had to play Cal on Thursday, I would actually have a little doubt if they would make the tournament if they were to lose. Cal's RPI is 54. They reason I'm so confident about SU's positioning, is because they are playing teams with top 10 RPI's. Wins help you move up the ladder quickly while a loss does not hurt you much.

Understood except, I want to win the ACC tournament. And Cal would be an easier game

I had family obligations yesterday and could not watch the game until tonight. Hut and the defense was amazing and the O perfectly opportunistic. Great performance and great in-season turnaround.

Come on, two more boys

And would love a home game in the NCAA

NC State, which SU tied and beat 3-0 on their home pitch, overwhelmed SLU last night and will play in the College Cup on Monday night against Washington. Just an FYI and a trigger for some good memories from this past season.

They looked very good. I like their chances Monday night.
