Syracuse (1-0) at Central Michigan (2-0) Sept. 13, 12:00, ESPNEWS
Here's The Deal: Syracuse and Central Michigan will learn a lot about itself when they meet in Mount Pleasant Saturday afternoon. The Chippewas are soaring after racing away from Purdue, 38-17, on the road last Saturday. Beating a Power Five team for a second-straight could signal that CMU is finally ready to contend again in the MAC West. The Orange had plenty to digest during its bye week, from a one-point escape of Villanova to the punch-related ejection of QB Terrel Hunt.
Why Syracuse Might Win: Hunt will play this week, which is great news for the Orange. He and his teammates should have success grinding out yards on the ground against a Central Michigan team that struggles to defend power football. Navigating wide lanes behind an experienced line will be playmaking senior Prince-Tyson Gulley.
Why Central Michigan Might Win: The Chips in West Lafayette looked like a different team than the one that almost fell to Chattanooga in Week 1. RB Thomas Rawls was terrific on the ground, and the D yielded just 3.9 yards a play. If WR Titus Davis, CMU’s best player, can return from a sprained knee, it’ll provide a huge lift to QB Cooper Rush and the rest of the offense.
Who To Watch Out For: Rawls is the unequivocal key for Central Michigan. And stopping him will top Syracuse’s priorities. If the Orange linemen can occupy blocks at the point of attack, it’s going to free up gifted linebackers Dyshawn Davis and Cameron Lynch to be draped all over No. 34.
What’s Going To Happen: Syracuse is rested and prepared. Central Michigan still has its head in the clouds after beating a Big Ten team by three touchdowns. While Dan Enos has the Chips surging in the right direction, they’ll fall just short, with the Orange winning at the line of scrimmage.
Prediction: Syracuse 28 … Central Michigan 24
