In 1973 the spring game was played on what two years later became known as Coyne Field.

In 1974, Frank Maloney brought the game back to Archbold.

In 1975, Maloney took the game to Holland Stadium in Auburn, NY - Ken Clarke was the defensive star that day.

And of course once the Dome was built the rest is history.

So, the missing site was Auburn's Holland Stadium.

Congratulations to those who played the game.

That is amazing, especially for me being from Auburn. It has the stands to fit around 2500-3000 with another 2500-3000 for standing room.

Great stuff OPA!

We were a Final Four team in 1975 ... Spring Football was on the back page. :)

interesting.

if you had said, and 1 is not in Syracuse...in a million years i never wouldve guessed auburn.

hell, i wouldve been googling towns in canada that may have a structure to hold it after exhausting the obvious towns like ithaca, albany, rochester, buffalo, binghampton, oneonta, hamilton etc...

For what it's worth, that Holland Stadium is a pretty neat venue

I went to that Auburn game and remember it well, even though I was only 11 years old. I remember after the game you could not get anywhere near Mandel Robinson and the media and Joel Marinas all over Mandel, it was his freshman year. I remember Monk was also a freshman and had a great day at RB. I remember Mike Jones had a big day also. I grew up in the area and yes, Holland Stadium is a very nice venue. I wish I saw the trivia question posted before now!

Mandel graduated from North Syracuse June 1976...This leads me to believe the game was in 1977. I wonder if Archbold was closed for some demolition of crumbling concrete?

BTW, I love the idea of having a spring practice in Rochester...I wonder if SU could call Utica College and borrow the stadium for a practice next year? A lot of fans drive over form Oneida County (might be a nice gesture)

Also, the Adirondack camp piqued my curiosity...when did that come to an end? Is it an NCAA violation to take them offsite now or could something like that happen again in the future?

I wish I could say that HC Frank M was playing these game in Auburn to recruit Buddy Hardeman. But he was a few years earlier. One of the best to ever play for Auburn HS, just a great athlete. Played QB for Auburn HS, went to Iowa St and played QB, then went and played every position (slot receiver, RB alot) for the Redskins. I loved watching the Redskins play on TV alot back then because they had Monk and Hardeman. Hardeman was the best football player to come out of Auburn. Incredible athlete.

The Holland Stadium event was during Maloney's second season -1975.

It was his second team. And he went on that fall to win six games that fall with a pretty good defense.

I'm pretty sure that Mandel was not yet part of the team that year - 1975.

He graduated from North Syracuse one year before I graduated from FM.

I graduated in 1977 - he graduated in 1976.

So, I don't think he was a frosh for that spring game.

Buddy was recruited by former SU assistant, Jim Shreve, who got him to Iowa State.

He was an outstanding player.
