The generosity of Daniel A. D’Aniello ’68, a University Life Trustee, and his wife, Gayle, is the catalyst behind the launch of Boost the Cuse, Syracuse University’s first ever Giving Day on Oct. 17. The D’Aniello family has pledged $500,000 to match new or additional gifts.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to energize this one-day, all-hands-on-deck effort to support the Invest Syracuse initiative,” says D’Aniello. “I am confident the funds raised will help those individuals with great talent and promise—but for whom a Syracuse degree seemed out of reach—to come here. I applaud my alma mater for taking such bold steps to elevate the University’s academic excellence and student experience.”

In addition to challenging others to give, the D’Aniello family’s gift will help support Invest Syracuse: Advancing Academic Excellence and the Student Experience, a $100 million initiative that seeks to redefine the student experience, advance discovery and innovation, and expand opportunity and access. The Invest Syracuse initiative includes a $40 million fundraising goal to support scholarships for promising students from across the socioeconomic spectrum.

“The D’Aniello family’s leadership and generosity are vital to the success of this ambitious 24-hour challenge,” says Chief Advancement Officer Matt Ter Molen. “The goal of the day is to have 1,870 donors join the D’Aniello family in supporting the University and this initiative.” Syracuse University was founded in 1870.

D’Aniello, who later this week will receive the Arents Award, Syracuse University’s highest alumni honor, has consistently supported the University in service and philanthropy. In addition to serving on Syracuse’s Board of Trustees, he co-chairs the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) Advisory Board and serves on the Martin J. Whitman School of Management Advisory Board. He also has contributed generously to scholarship funds, student experiential learning, the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities, the D’Aniello Lecture Series, the IVMF and the Whitman School.

Professionally, D’Aniello is chair and co-founder of The Carlyle Group. Prior to forming Carlyle in 1987, he was vice president for finance and development at Marriott Corp., where he oversaw the valuation of all major mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, debt and equity offerings and project financings. Before that, he was a financial officer at PepsiCo and Trans World Airlines.

D’Aniello was awarded the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation’s Lone Sailor Award for drawing upon his Sea Service experience to achieve success in his personal and professional life, while exemplifying the core values of honor, courage and commitment. He is a member of the Council for the United States and Italy, the John Templeton Foundation, the Lumen Institute and the U.S.-China CEO and Former Senior Officials’ Dialogue of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He is vice chair of the board of trustees of the American Enterprise Institute for Public Research and chair of the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts. He also has overseen various public and private companies in which Carlyle has or has had significant investment interests.

Boost the ’Cuse!

What is Boost the ’Cuse?

Boost the ’Cuse is Syracuse University’s first-ever giving day—a 24-hour campaign starting at 12:01 a.m., Tuesday, October 17, 2017. What’s our goal? To inspire at least 1,870 alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff, and friends to support the part of Syracuse they love most!

Agreed. Pretty amazing they didn't have one.
I think it's a little bit of semantics. They have had giving opportunities but none that have just been for one day only.

Ditto. I get US mail, emails and the occasional phone call all the time looking for money.

Dan was a classmate and friend of mine. As I recall, he was from a working class background (steel mills around Pittsburgh) who was a scholar athlete in the finest sense (gymnastics). A regular, great guy who was studying transportation of all things. Had no idea what great heights he would achieve, but well deserved.

Dear Orange Friends:

Tomorrow is a first for Syracuse University. At 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, October 17, we will launch Syracuse University’s first day of giving.

Leading this ambitious 24-hour campaign called “Boost the ’Cuse” with a generous challenge gift is alumnus and recent Arents Award recipient Dan D’Aniello ’68. Dan and his wife, Gayle, are challenging Syracuse alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff, friends, and fans to give back to Syracuse. I accept Dan’s challenge and will make my gift tomorrow, and I hope you, along with thousands of others, will too.

Being part of the Syracuse University community forges a strong bond. We are a community that values and strives for continued academic excellence and an unsurpassed student experience. One that comes together in support of a shared passion. And one that believes in making a difference in the lives of our students and creating positive change on campus and around the world.

Tomorrow is a wonderful and fun opportunity to show your Syracuse pride. I look forward to seeing the Orange community in action, and both Ruth and I are proud to be part of it.

Please visit mission.syr.edu and take advantage of the many giving challenges, then make your own gift to the area of the University that means the most to you. I look forward to participating in all of the giving activity tomorrow and celebrating this successful effort with you!

Sincerely,

Chancellor Kent Syverud

Co-founder of Carlyle Group? This guy probably close to being a billionaire... glad he's kickstarting this. I'm sure he'll be dropping $25 mil to kickstart the new Dome. ;)

Still don't accept PayPal. SMH.
They are working on it. I am at the event in the alumni photo posted above, and that is exactly the question I asked. I also have asked it before. Wishart will be getting that done it appears. I also asked about Venmo. He said most likely PayPal, but not Venmo. They know that more will donate with the convenience of PayPal. I pointed this out to them.
Yes, this is our first 24 hour giving campaign, and they know that they were way behind many other schools in doing this. Many things in the SU culture are changing, and this is one of them.
Also the new goal is called One University, which is to unite all aspects of SU under one banner and to unite all areas of SU including alumni, giving, academics, research, etc.

With the victory over Clemson I have decided to donate to the Athletic Directors Discretionary Fund tomorrow.

I did the same thing with my first donation.

I also set up a challenge where I donated $144 to the football program after 44 people donated via my challenge. It has already been met. To do football, I did "other" and wrote in SU football program.

I also am doing one of the events here in AZ tomorrow night at Hula's Phoenix location (any AZ people, come by 5:30-7:30. SU buying our first round of appetizers). Oh and I am back less than 24 hours.

This campaign has been in the works for months. The "strike while the iron is hot" comment above, is not really true. No one could plan this that fast. The date adds up to the number 44, thus why it is 10/17/17. It is just lucky that this falls a couple of days after an epic football win, and we are all feeling a bit extra warm and fuzzy about SU !!

He's worth north of $2B... so way above being "close." ;)
