I have to ask... why? Why the resistance to making donating as easy as humanly possible? If people can just quick link a donation from the variety of ways of one click payments (including Paypal)... wouldn't it obviously lead to more donations?
I can answer this... people hate linking up bank accounts to make PayPal work fully for them. Once you do it...it is an awesome way to send money among friends.

Just to give you a sense of what other schools do and how they do it:

Columbia had their giving day today. Obviously their alumni base should have a few more dollars to spare on average, but the numbers are pretty staggering:

Columbia Giving Day 2017

Looks like they have more alumni who are willing to give back as well. 20% of that gave to SU and staff were among them. I don't know how, but SU needs to find out why alumni are not giving back.

I'll probably start giving when I feel I've wrung every last cent of value out of the cap and gown the law school forced me to purchase for graduation. Haven't stopped enjoying it yet, though.

Seriously, this might sound petty to some, but those nickel-dimer unfriendly moves SU makes aren't always forgotten or forgiven. $160,000 that I'll be paying off for decades and those putzes ring me up an extra $150 to graduate? Can't bake that into the tuition? Eh. Be satisfied with the couple grand I'm laying out for hoops/football season tickets every year, because my charity is going to more worthy recipients.

Which is funny because PayPal owns Venmo

Is one more popular than the other with the younger demographic? I know my "kids" (ages 23 and 27) use Venmo all the time, but have never used Paypal. Most of their friends are Venmo users as well. I would think that if the University wants to capture the new alums they should meet them on their own playing field, whether that's Venmo or whatever.

I'm 29 and use Paypal. I don't use Venmo at all. If I need to send someone money I'll use Chase Quickpay or PayPal.

I'm 26. I love paypal for purchasing things on the computer (ebay was the reason I got it but so many companies allow paypal which is huge)

Venmo is commonly used for sending money quick. I pay my mom my share of the phone bill over that.

So for a 26 year old I use both but for different reasons. SU could do a venmo specific campaign if they allowed it. PayPal should (and it seems like it will) be an option for those sitting on a computer who want to give.

I feel old - I've never even heard of Venmo. I like to think I do fairly well with keeping up with technology also - I use Paypal.

Every single school in the country charges for cap & gown. Try being a PhD - look up those prices. $150 is CHEAP.

Eh, Colgate doesn't. So I've thanked them by donating money at least once a year for a decade. Bard, same deal. So they got money from me this year too.

Limited sample size, but it looks like that "every single school" bit isn't correct.

Fair enough. I take back the overriding statement. Point remains that I still believe the majority do.

I also think that if you want to make excuses as to why you won't donate, then you won't. Whether it be a janitor who made a snide remark to you, or a professor who gave you a bad grade, or a $150 charge for a cap & gown.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Not saying SU is perfect by any stretch, but the one thing you mention is done by many other schools all the same.

Colgate does make it up with higher costs though than SU. So I guess like you said you'd rather pay that $150 more a year hidden in tuition than $150 for a lone shot fee?

I just found this...seems like a great way to communicate. Future looks bright.

My small contribution. Won't be able to get to any games this year :(

Have watched every game this season (have probably missed 3 or 4 since Marrone took over; GERG made me want to vomit) and going into the Pitt game thought if we lose, I may not annoy my fiance and all wedding planning and family related activities to make certain I'm in front of a TV when 'Cuse plays.

PS- She has become a big time Orange fan and when she came home Friday night in the 4th quarter as the game was winding down and then over, she was in tears at the togetherness of Dungey and Zaire and Dino.
When we were dating and things were getting serious, I "dragged" her up to 'Cuse and we saw the Wake game when Dungey made his first start (hit Brisly up the middle for an 80+ yard TD, found Kendall Coleman after scrambling away from trouble for a key 3rd down conversion as examples) and has been an Orange fan ever since.

That and RC from Lucy's (or whatever its called now) recognized me 15 years after graduation and brought us into his office to chat. Funny stuff.

Sounds silly when you put it that way, no doubt. Maybe these things cause offense when you've got no job, loan interest is already capitalizing, and the bar exam is two months away. In that context, it just seemed like a thumb in the eye from the school. Commencement should be a celebration, not a way to wring a few last bucks out of everyone.

Bet it’s an optional fee for larger universities where more non traditional, married, older, international students attend. If you decide to go to graduation ceremonies, you pay, if you decide not to, you don’t.
