I know what SWC will say!

For combined seasons, from 1997-98 to 2014-15, playing for Syracuse, playing Guard or Guard/Forward or Forward/Guard, requiring 2-Point Field Goal Attempts >= 50, sorted by descending 2-Point Field Goal Percentage.

McNamara missed so many runners.

I get scared off by reports of incoming freshman who can "take it to the rim" or whatever. that sets off my "can't shoot" red flag

But we need better 2 pt FG % from our guards asap

FYI gbinije falls of that list, i don't know if it's because he's marked as duke/Syracuse or what. He's at 49% whichwould be in the top 10 despite being awful last year from 2 pt range

Ignore Shump, this data doesn't go back far enough

Nice - the first thought for me when you mentioned "runners" was whether Edelin would be number one.

And he is.

That kid had such a nice floater. Loved Edelin.

Not surprised that Edelin and Pace were the best from 2, because that's what they did well--and all that they did.

Two quick reactions:
  • I'd expect these numbers from 2 to be lower for MOST guards, since unlike Edelin / Pace, most guards shoot from the perimeter. Anything inside the three point line factors into this analysis, which is why guards will generally tend to be lower in 2P FG% [and also why Sherman Douglas's FG % in both college AND the pros was pretty amazing for a player as small as he was].

  • I'm not sure how best to compare interpretive data for players who are primarily inside scorers despite playing a wing position to more traditional guards. This is about more than just the ability to finish inside or take it to the basket.

Look at our last three point guards (since Scoop graduated).

Terrible. A lot of factors have contributed to our struggling offensively for three years, but this is one that jumps out and hits me on the head. If your guards can't score near the hoop, you're in trouble.

Also, I'm surprised to see Rautins way up there. Anyone handy with YouTube want to create a highlight video of his 78 two-point makes? I remember a dunk at Providence and a game-winning drive and layup at Marquette but can't really envision another two-pointer. Did he make a lot of mid-range jumpers?

Brandon Triche looks undervalued by all of these metrics. I wonder how he would of performed as a point guard.

I'm not totally sure how bad some of the numbers are. The national average on 2 point field goals is generally around 48%. And that includes all players, big guys are generally gonna shoot better on 2's. My guess is the guard average is probably around 44 or 45%?

At Jonny Flynn's size, 52.5% is pretty damn impressive.

i remember him being pretty good at the mid range jumper

(not good enough for me to have wanted more those shots)

Agreed. Especially not bad for perimeter players.

The one that looks pretty bad, to me, is MCW, who is like 6-5 and made 43% of his 2 pointers. I definitely remember him having some trouble finishing at the rim.

Rautin I recall was pretty crafty getting tip ins.

it was always fun looking at the shot chart for josh pace. you just draw a tight circle inside the left lane and fill in how many lefty bunnies he made that night. he was so easy for coaches to scout but so hard to stop!
