I did this fast so it could be all wrong.

Added each schools total football and basketball attendance and divided by the total number of basketball and football games

(I didn't have basketball numbers for teams below 100th in the country so I used the #100 team's totals for those)

Here's the list. We come in 22nd. Obviously that has a lot to do with basketball capacity but look at how much the factories are brought down by basketball. If they had a huge appetite for college basketball, they'd build bigger gyms.

Maybe this is why the AD doesn't really care too much about 30-40K in the Dome for 6 dates a year. Because they know they'll make most of it up with basketball.

Not every ticket is equal value, but interesting list though.

The respective costs of SU's football and basketball tickets have converged over the past decade.

And I would like to know the student body # for each school, as well as some of the closest "major" cities.

Doesn't look to me, and I could be missing one or two, that any of the top 21 are private schools. Looks like SU is the top or near the top of the private schools. I think A&M might be a private school and possibly Auburn is a private school but I'm not sure. Either way, look at all of those big state schools at the top. Just about every person living in those areas has a family member that went to that school, and so just about everyone at one time or another goes to games. I think it just becomes a bigger part of the culture.

if you take each school's rank in basketball attendance and average it with their rank in football attendance, SU's score is #20th in the country. Football no shows are bad but the actual "attendance" numbers are average

Here's that list up to Syracuse
Ohio St.
Nebraska
Tennessee
Wisconsin
Michigan
Kentucky
Arkansas
Michigan St.
North Carolina
BYU
Iowa
Louisville
Texas
Alabama
North Carolina St.
Oklahoma
South Carolina
Florida
LSU
Syracuse

random note Creighton gets big basketball crowds, wow 17k

If SU basketball's attendance were halved, they'd still be 31st

Yeah, this is why SU must keep the dome, at least for hoops. I'm beginning to think they should build an outdoor football stadium that seats 35-40,ooo. Maybe they could put it in or near the location where they held FanFest. People could tailgate all over the area and easily walk to the game. More tailgating around the stadium would attract more students especially if the food is good and the beer is cheap.

I'm trying to figure out which other schools are like us. I know this is a mess. I wonder how much SU talks to other schools in the same boat.

Kansas 7th in basketball, 37th in football
Indiana 8th bball, 54th football

others

Kentucky and Louisville are 30th and 39th in football.
North Carolina 35th in football
San Diego state is 27th in basketball, 71st in football
Arizona 17th bball, 42nd football

There are big swings for a lot of these schools. very few are highly ranked in both. Nebraska is suprisingly at the top. The lowest ranking they have is 10th. We are 34th in this measure.

We were expecting a drop without McDermott and a Missouri Valley recruited team playing Big East teams but stayed in the top 10 for attendance. They have done a really good job making Creighton Basketball a HUGE deal in Omaha.

The gist seems to be that SU represents pretty well, but it could be better. A modest increase in football using past numbers looks good in comparison to other schools especially when combining hoops. The silver benches in the dome and the camera angles for football make the empty seats in the dome more apparent than most outdoor college stadiums.

SU is truly a dual sport school. One of the best mixes of revenue streams in the P5. It's how the school is able to compete. And it's something the school should take pride in.

Lacrosse has to be a nice little bonus too.

Lax actually doesn't carry it's own weight, at least to the reports to the Dept of Education. It's the highest grossing program in the sport but also the most expensive according to that disclosure.

I used to travel to Omaha a lot for work at a previous employer. Sneaky cool city. I really liked it.

Also, you've got Pepperjax. Huge bonus. That's a franchise that really needs to expand westward.
