SU is making a huge mistake on Duke game

I don't wanna think to into this because ultimately I just realize that we need a legitimate big basketball arena... the dome just isn't keeping up with our basketball program. The writings on the wall. I love the dome and it's history but its a football place.
No program would build an arena for basketball over 20k. That would limit our program greatly, price out casual fans, and affect our ability to attract recruits who think the Dome is incredible.

Yes it's back my favorite thread. Right up there with when will JB retire and do we think MCW will turn pro.

Flipping the court is a big deal. You shouldn't do it on superbowl weekend when it will be an afterthought in the national media. It deserves a weekend when it is the biggest game in town.

The only game I can see that would have the potential to fill the Dome similar to this year's Duke game is if Kentucky came here to play. They could in part sell it as a way to claim the attendance crown for that year. Other than that, I can't foresee another game that would generate the same interest level to fill the Dome with 50k fans since as others have mentioned, JB will not be announcing when his last game will be.

The only problem with your theory is that I can't see Kentucky signing a deal in which by doing so, they might possibly cost themselves that season's attendance record.

I agree completely Bill - I don't foresee it ever happening either. Which IMHO means that the likelihood the court ever being moved is extremely remote. As SWC said earlier in this thread, the Duke game was the game to do it if they ever wanted to - that opportunity has now passed.

Disagree.
Moving the court is gonna happen, that's a no-brainer IMO.
And after its done the 1st time, it'll get done a few more times against different opponents. And just like the 30K+ mark was broken several times vs GTown, Nova, ND, RU, and so on, the 50K+ mark will fall vs Duke, UNC, UL, UK, or whatever major occasion is happening at the time.
We had the Rutgers record-breaker for Melo's last game in '03, & if McCullough or Roberson, or some other phenom has us on a NC trajectory, you can bet folks will set a new record for their final game at SU.
Coach K and Duke, or ol' Roy and UNC, will be back and we can plan the court moving in a proper way at that time.
Its inevitable...so let's make sure we do it right.
Now...for the love of all things holy...can we merge all these threads and just move on, already? :blah:

I don't know if it will definitely happen, but I'm inclined to agree that just because it didn't happen this year, doesn't mean it can't. Planning it for the future gives the school the chance to plan schedule logistics as well as court logistics and also get season ticket holders on board by letting them know what is happening (and where they would be sitting) before they send over their money.

No they're not. You're making way too big a deal about playing Duke. And way too big a deal about breaking/setting a record we already own by a very large margin. I understand where you're coming from a marketing persepctive it would be a great event and look shiny. But to what end? I think you are overestimating the importance of it. Will it happen someday? Maybe, but I wouldn't want to be there and I just hope the cameras are able to get close enough to the court to get a good view of it on TV. Basketball games in Domes suck. Concerts inside of Domes suck. Too big and too far away from the action. I love the Dome for foobtall and as configured for hoop. I've seen many concerts in the Dome (Police, Pink Floyd, U2, Foreigner) they suck (ok well Floyd didn't suck but no one has a stage show like that, no one). Its not a good venue to watch something taking place on such a small "stage" as a basketball court or a concert stage.

My point though is I can't see another occasion that would bring the type of crowd to the Dome similar to this year's Duke game. 30k crowds have happened many times in the Dome but do you really think we will have multiple 50k crowds? I guarantee season ticket holders would be even more up in arms if they thought this was going to be a regular occurrence.

We have not held the NCAA attendance record since 1995. Moving the court would not change our perennial second place showing. We can get more fans into our arena, but on a week by week basis, fans attend better in Kentucky. Sure Lexington is bigger than Syracuse, but the reality is that even when our total annual attendance figures exceed Kentucky, we still lose on average game attendance.

I would rather we find a way to get back to #1. Maybe the switch to the ACC will be enough to do it.

UK had a total attendance of 415,775 last year ... divided by 18 games = 23,099 average.
SU had a total attendance of 426,347 last year ... divided by 19 games = 22,439 average.

With a 15,000 bump in attendance for one game
SU would have a total of 441,347 ... or an average of 23,228 for the year. :)

Interesting. Very funny. I hadn't thought of that. You are correct.

Although we pulled more people last year than Kentucky, that extra home game did us in.

I thought it would have been pretty cool to move the court and get 50K, from an "on the surface" standpoint. But the atmosphere is already going to be electric and there isn't much of a reason to do it if people have concerns.

In fact, I give them A LOT of credit for not crumbling under national-pressure when they concluded it was in their best interest to keep the court as is.
