SU Playing in Players Era NIL Tournament in Vegas in 2025

Disappointed we’re not going to get one easier game. There are a lot of brand name teams in the tournament, but that being said, only Syracuse and Creighton play two teams that are ranked in ESPNs top 25. (Although nobody has 2 easy games).

Despite the fact that we have been down for several years, they know that Syracuse will draw eyeballs and interest and thus are “rewarded” with the toughest schedule.

Points and point differential will keep us from winning this tournament no matter what, but it would not matter if somehow we could win both of those games vs Houston and Kansas. We could be considered the de facto champion.

Some reasons for optimism. Kansas is a fringe top 25 team (where we could possibly be), and Houston only returns 30 points a game and will be relying on two highly regarded freshmen who are projected starters. Although they are slightly higher rated than our two star freshmen, our two are not even likely to be in our top 6 to start the year, and theirs are projected starters, so clearly they are not as deep as they have recently been.

It also benefits us to be out there a few extra days playing basketball and getting used to the environment

I can hear the excuses for losing already...we absolutely need to win 1 of the 3 in the actual event. St Joseph's doesn't move the needle. If we go 0-3, stick a fork in us. Bringing back Autry and the improved roster almost mandates that we have to win one...anything else would be a disaster
I could run through a wall after reading this uplifting viewpoint!

I think that with all teams being allowed to pay players has greatly reduced Kansas' advantage.

We'll have to see if there is an excess of NIL in Kansas to keep their advantage going.

Based on their roster this year there is nothing special about them.

Don't they have the best Freshman in the country coming in? Darryn Peterson.

They do- but their returning cast isn’t all that impressive nor is their portal hauls. Leaning on top freshmen as starters isn’t the formula for success anymore. Point is , they will be decent but hardly anywhere near the task that playing Houston will be.

Agree. I think even most KU fans around my area are in "believe it when I see it" with their portal additions now. They have struggled the past couple season with their portal additions not panning out like they hoped and I'm not sure this season is looking much different.

Smart scheduling by Syracuse to get Houston as a non-conference game so we won't be put into the same NCAA bracket since we already played them during the season. ;)

Also, why are these games on a Monday and Tuesday afternoon? It seems like TV would prefer a weekend slate of games.

Thanksgiving early season tourney week

Do many people have or take the whole week of Thanksgiving off from work?

I'd guess TV likely prefers the Monday and Tuesday day games so they are not competing against college football/NFL on the weekend.

A lot of ppl take the week but this has been the tv schedule forever that I can remember since espn started it as “feast week”

There's a difference between taking off and pretending your working that week. It's a wasted week most places and companies know it. Too much stress built into family stuff for Thanksgiving on Thursday or that weekend. There's a reason Wednesday night is the biggest party night of the year.

Monday and Tuesday people are just going through the motions and then Wednesday most people are packing up in the afternoon and taking off to travel or get things ready.

Also now for schools most places give students off the whole week anyway so it's not overlapping with classes or tests or anything like that.

Vegas F1 is 11/22 and Browns @ Raiders on 11/23, so decent hotels are impossible. I usually get comps and I see nothing respectable for under 250 a night.

Well it's Vegas.

Had a dream last night that we got out to a big lead against Houston and then were holding on for dear life in the 2H.

I told myself I would be in very tentative wait and see mode, but clearly that's impossible.
I had the dream too and game winning shots came on a drive from Starling where he is fouled but misses the shot as time expires down one, sinks both FT's to tie and go ahead after Houston had taken the lead. Great game.
