was informed the event for this year has now been cancelled.. wonder what changed from last week..

2 years in a row? Not good. Especially cancelling it with 2 weeks still to go before LOI day.

what is the reason for this? They need to do a better job of cozying up to fans with these types of events. Bad job by the football program if true

Most school use this event as a carrot to leverage people to donate to the program. Proof again that we have the worst marketing of any school in the country.

what I don't get is that for me it really didn't even have to be done close to signing day to be an event worth attending. I would have been happy with some Sat afternoon in feb where it didnt conflict with the Bball team, it would have let them arrange film, prepare comments , dont even care if it was free either.

how complicated is this whole marketing idea? Ticket promotions, event planning, email info, etc.. they struggle with all of this simple stuff.

For all the folders and plans Marrone keeps, they sure seem disorganized sometimes.
Not so sure this has as much to do with Marrone as it does with the SU Athletics staff. Marrone doesn't plan out these types of events, the school's PR, Marketing, and Communications staffs do.

If I had to guess, the new coaches aren't in place and they don't want to be asked any questions until they are...

This would be my guess as well.

Seriously? I can't believe this is the reason. A simple canned answer about how Marrone is "in the process" and "should have something to announce soon" would suffice people asking.

This seems to be an achilles heel for SU...not just the athletics dept. If you want to a) get people involved and more importantly b) get them to write a check, you need to spend some time/money and give them value.

If it were up to me, I would make this event some of signing day/meet the coaches/tour the facilities/food&drink/etc. Charge $100 or whatever and advertise that part of your money goes towards helping to fund the new football facilities. Make people feel like they matter and that there money means something.

One of the reasons SU is different than say, Alabama is that a lot of the donor base / potential donor base isn't really a short drive from campus. They could do a video thing though on OAA for a certain donor level.

Or maybe CIL is right. But if he is the staff truly overestimates the amount of caring on that topic.

I agree Bayside -- this is stupid. You don't have to cancel it and could move it back a week or two.

This is Marrone's program... I don't care how bad the Marketing team is... The coaching staff should be pushing for these events. Winning back the fans was in his Plan... So he should take it personally, and in many ways he has, but this seems like a missed opportunity. Just my opinion...

Disagree on worst marketing of any school. The team really hustled this football season and have been plotting how to make the USC game to be a big deal.

Marrone is the CEO of the football program. Buck stops there on this one.

It sucks if this event is cancelled however to blame Marrone is just plain wrong. When your company plans a party who sets it up the president or owner of the company no its the receptionist or assistant.

Who says "we're gonna have a party?"

How do they cancel an event that was never publicly announced in the first place?

I'm surprised to hear praise for how they are marketing the program. Would love to have you elaborate. Perhaps I'm being to hard on the people with their hands in the marketing mix.

As for the USC game, I, too, know they department has been plotting for a while to make a huge push for this year's game in NJ. However, until they prove it, color me suspect.

its one thing to market something and have it fail.. but the lack of effort on so many occasions is just puzzling..

I won't gush over the marketing department, but not as putrid as some think.

I don't know of any receptionist or assistant that would have the power to cancel a company event. At least no company I've ever worked at.

I meant the planning of it.

Always loved this event. Was always a good time. Hope they do a little something
