SU signing day event? cancelled

Used to love them when P had them (didn't go to any of GRob's so I don't know if he had them or how they did them). Showed video of each kid and had the position coaches talk about each of their guys. Lots of rubbing elbows and some snacks. Good times.

Disagree on worst marketing of any school. The team really hustled this football season and have been plotting how to make the USC game to be a big deal.

Marrone is the CEO of the football program. Buck stops there on this one.
You are right Mad, I should have said fund raising rather than marketing (though they are related). It is mind boggling to me that you would not have an event to showcase the new class, sell the new recruits to the fanbase and help to mobilize the fans for the 2012 season.

The biggest issue I have with this is that IMHO, there are no enough events/perks/pluses for the donors to make them feel they are getting some value for their money. If the university can't win on the field, at least win off the field with some value added product for the donors.

I have to believe this is all a misunderstanding and that there will be an event. No way the SU AD office would drop the ball this badly. Aren't events like these why they keep hiring more and more assistant ADs?

the only info i got was an email that said expect a notice within the week of the event plans. then it was followed a few days later by an email that said sorry, the event has been cancelled and there will not be one..

I'd really hope that Marrone has coaches in place by the time the event takes place. You could be talking the first or second weekend in February.

Not having an event is outrageous. People up on the Hill - whether it be the football staff or athletic staff just don't get it.

How many associate ADs and marketing people do they have anyways? Did we used to laugh that Gross was making everybody and associate AD?

Get in touch with your local fan base and sell some season tickets. You're gearing up to enter the ACC, get people interested.

SO true Tomcat, there isn't much value to donating to the football program, there just isn't. I do but it leaves me scratching my head at times

Not that I would attend anyway, but I hope this is wrong. I fear the next step at some point will be to close spring practices.. If that should happen (and I hope it won't), the fan friendly head coach we hired in mid December 2008 will have been completely replaced by this new grumpy guy that ages in dog years.

Maybe he's so upset by the fans who don't care, he's inadvertantly taking it out on the ones who do.

Are you saying Marrone doesn't want one or are you saying Marrone should be the one sending out mailers, arranging chairs and picking the menu?

I'd imagine that as the football team CEO Marrone would say "I want a recruit signing event" and the athletic department would be tasked with getting the non football details done; and football staffers would be tasked with getting the football details done - such as putting film together etc. Everybody consulting with Marrone (and his vision of the event) along the way.

AD dept could capitalize on the even and market for fund raising and selling tickets; the football coaches aren't in the business of marketing.

If Marrone doesn't want an event though then well I guess there'd not be an event; unless of course his boss told him to have an event.

One of the reasons SU is different than say, Alabama is that a lot of the donor base / potential donor base isn't really a short drive from campus. They could do a video thing though on OAA for a certain donor level.

Or maybe CIL is right. But if he is the staff truly overestimates the amount of caring on that topic.

So do it the night of Friday 2/10. I am sure that most of the donor base will be there that weekend for the UConn game. Have a little get together in Club 44 at like 8pm and everyone is happy. And you would just need Marrone and Gedney to show, not all the coaches.

lettermans top 5 reasons su wont have a signing event-

1-they cant afford it with the manley renovations?

2-the secretaries are too busy sending out help wanted letters?

3-janitors dont have time too clean up after the estimated crowd of 15-17 people?

4-marrone doesnt have the patience to answer anymore questions about just what the hell he did in new orleans for the offense and why he cant bring some here?

5-easy way for the staff to avoid pointing out who actually was in charge of special teams last season?

Oh fundraising? Agree. They suck.

My expectation of a CEO is to set the course...not to pick out the main course.

They were great. Solid. And you really saw the depth of smarts and passion of the coaches as they showcased the film.

No, I know that you know, i was being a little sarcastic...but does Marrone just simply not want to have one?

If so then the AD should take over and instruct him to have the event.
