Syracuse University suggests it may punish students for failing to intervene in 'bias-motivated' incidents
Might be the dumbest thing I have seen since the idea of giving repossessed housing to the homeless. So a freshman woman should be required to intervene if she sees or thinks she sees a bias incident? What does intervene even mean?

I have no idea if this is something that would actually be implemented but if it is I hope SU is prepared for what I suspect will be a massive amount of lawsuits the first time a person or persons is punished under this new rule. I think we all would hope someone would intervene when a racist or bias situation is happening but there is no law that I am aware of that requires someone to do so. SU is playing with fire here.

In some countries if you witness a crime you are legally obligated to either intervene or report to the authorities. I can’t tell the exact rule that is in SU code of conduct but I think that law from other places makes sense. Intervening is not always the best option but required reporting at a minimums is not awful

I don't believe the US has any such law. I know many states have a good Samaritan Law including NY but that only protects people who choose to attempt to intervene in a situation in good faith from being sued.

how do you even know though.. if i see 2 people and think its a race thing and then i find out its a couples thing . As much as it seems obvious it isnt always. So now we want the 5 ft tall FR girl to jump in and confront 6'5 guys who are behaving poorly? And where does this extend too? Campus/Bars/The mall?

In light of so many incidents in the last few years where people decide to record something bad happening to someone else instead of calling the authorities, I like this in theory but don't see how you can realistically and fairly enforce it. This feels like pandering to me.

Use the video to prosecute the offender (whichever party is the offender). Then use the fact that (formerly) good Samaritan that videoed the incident videoed the incident rather than intervening and give him/her life plus 30 years. (sarcasm font off)

I agree, not really enforceable. If a law (or rule) is not really enforceable, is t really a law (or rule)?

Even dumber:. SU is making kids where name tags with preferred gender pronouns listed

Sounds like a bad Seinfeld final episode.

Only white males will be prosecuted (small print)

so much wasted energy and resources on the hill - who even comes up with this?

Beat me to it. This is the Good Samaritan law with no clear meaning as to what a bias incident is. The adults in the room have let the inmates run the asylum.
Who beat you to it? ;)

The son of my DO goes to a small, upstate NY, pCatholic college. He is very religious and somewhat conservative. His cross country coach told him, among other things, that if he and a friend were having a private conversation about those things and a third person approached them, they should stop the conversation, because it might upset that 3rd person.
He recorded the conversation with the coach to cover his butt. I encouraged him to complain, or go public.

You have no duty to help someone unless of the following exceptions.
1. The person is a minor you are responsible for the day to day care of.
2. If you start a rescue you must complete it to the best of your ability.

You can’t jump in the water and try to rescue a drowner and just quit. You had to try and rescue once you start the rescue.

Good sematarian laws are for firefighters or medical personnel so they have legal protections from lawsuits and liability. Seinfeld as usual was using TV show logic.

Yeah, not a good idea. You should never legislate snitching. Good behavior is organic, and there will always be bad behavior. Discourage it. Enforce common sense penalties. But to separate our hate related offenses perpetuates hate.

Im an administrator at a college and I’m required to report any discriminatory, racial bias, harassing or intimidating behavior I witness or hear about. RA’s and student leaders Are required to as well.

Granted, it’s not the whole student population but colleges and universities have a code of conduct that all students have to agree to in order to attend. It doesn’t have to be a law to require it.

Now the optics of it is a different conversation.

Seinfeld was making a point about the flaws of the characters, with made up law in a made up town

Which is why I loved the Seinfeld finale so much. It was perfect and weaved in all the extras over the years.

It was a fitting end, even if it disappointed so many.

In real life, a law like this is, of course, absurd.
