This UT fan does a nice job breaking down how UT embarrassed the SU defense. Watching it, you can see there were a lot of times we were in position to make a play and either missed a tackle or were just a little too late. Hemple did what he wanted and we were very poorly prepared.

I hope we learn from all the mistakes.

Really highlights some serious issues on defense.
Heupel runs a top tier (if not the best) offense in college football, he has made many DC's look terrible.
I really hope ERob and the coaches on the D side take this as a huge learning opportunity.

Agree. He runs a great system and maximizes his talent. Look at what Nico didn’t do in another offense. It’s why they let him go.

Posted elsewhere but I don't think people realize the volume of how much experience Tennessee started on both sides of the ball. UT's 3rd string RB was Duke's starting RB last year that ran for almost 1K yards. Both sides of the line had dozens of starts at the P2 level against ranked opponents on the road and that's on their 2 deeps as well.

On the other hand we showed up with the opposite, very few of our guys had ever started a game at this level. They had to grow up real fast.

I also want to point out in that video that from about the 12 min mark of the 3rd quarter for the next 20-25 mins of game time that Tenn score was stuck at 38. If you tell me that against any team they only score let alone a ranked team on the road that the defense only gave up 7 points in the last 20-25 mins of a game I'll take that all day every day. Long gone are the days of past coaches over the last 20 years where the score got 2 TDs and then ballooned to 5 TD's through the 2nd half because we ran out of gas.

Way too little too late but they got their feet under them later in the game just was too late.

Thanks to Jeff Nixon. Need to make sure we pay him whatever it takes to stick around.

Im not sure we will be able to pay him to stick around because he is likely going to get a HC position after this season.

This is a positive.

When we are hiring OCs they want to see that there is track record of people advancing their careers through our program and under HC Fran Brown.

The more we set up, the easier it is to hire.

And yet were still relatively in the game for the whole time.

Yep we were and this is why I've had a hard time taking a moral victory here. While there were some positives I thought we played rather poorly and lost because of it. Tennessee isn't a great team. Their QB stunk. We were out coached I thought on both sides of the ball AND made far too many individual mistakes on defense. We'll see if we're detailed and accountable or not.

I am thinking that the issue with our defense is the DL. Their OL just swallowed up our DL. Sure, our LBs and DBs have to tackle better... but if our DL can virtually never shed a block to make a tackle or even slow/alter momentum, that really hurts. Their RBs were hitting the holes with momentum and our LBs/DBs are making the play against that momentum. So even making the hit and stopping the run leads to 5-6 yard gain. I also think the tackling was bad relative to trying to get strips. I think we need to tie up players and have the second guy go for the strip. Tennessee has a great run game, so hopefully that was the issue. Tennessee is just well coached. And their QB actually did quite well too.

Well, I do not think we called a really good game in the 1st Quarter offensively. We had way too much motion and way too little rhythym. Tennessee came out with a plan and to make us react. We came out reacting. Play calls were slow. How many times did we have to call timeouts to avoid a delay? Nixon had an OK game by the end, but Tennessee's O.C. had a far better day.

The delay on play calls has been an issue IIRC from last season.

Hopefully this is an area where we see some improvement.

Its great to see some film review. It shows your mistakes and confusion.

Play 2 the WR screen. Illegal blocking on Tenn goes uncalled.

Play 3 the kid panics when he is great position on a terrible throw. PI could have been a pick, our backside LB/DE doesnt commit to the play which causes some late pressure . Lets see that get better . even so thats a 10 yd drop so hard to get home

Play 4 nice call by Tenn. But our LE/LB whoever it is. Sees the play but where is he running? Turns his head and takes off creating the huge lane to cut back under the blocking. If he is actually watching the RB he probably blows up the play

Play 5 he talks about the Corner release. Tenn is really wide in this formation. I have to think the DB did this by design. I guess he forgets it was 3rd and 10 and we are in zone so the DB has the dump to the RB. If he releases to the outside then he turns from the field and can't see the RB. My question here is why on 3rd and 10 is the safety 10 yds deeper than the other safety making it a simple pass and catch. I guess too worried about the deep ball he gave a 25 yd cushion?

Play 6 the run play. Nice run by the RB. But your D has the MLB hit the RB at the 3 in the hole ne makes no move and gets run over. Thats a play you want your D to make

Play 7 the strip sack. you run max protect with late RB leak in case . The center cant hold the block so nice job by the DT. But we had oline with nothing to do.. Would like to not see that play break down. Maybe the Center knowing he has some help leverages better to force the DT to the guard next time and the pocket doesn't break down at all?

Play 8 the deep ball. Nice route by the WR confused the young DB. Both safeties are caught coming up for the run. i think this is an example of trying to do too much.

Play 9. nice call vs the coverage and we send the LB. Not sure how would ever cover this play if the safety is going to give a 15 yd cushion. Seems like going single high would make more sense and roll the Safety over about 5 yds. this wouldn't have causes such a mad scramble and missed tackle? But this play was on the fly after the long run.. Perhaps a TO should have been called to give them a chance to regroup? was it?

After the half the option play by the QB.. Again the LB trying to do too much.. GT will kill us if we don't clean that up

We had position on too many plays. fix half of those

Ok football people, help me out with this one. 2 minutes into this video, 3rd and 10. We show blitz with 6, but #8 Reese on the outside then appears to have the responsibility of the RB. Which seems fine. But then where exactly is he going?

Great question, what he does is bizarre.

I think we were for sure caught off guard by Heupel calling a much more aggressive game with Aguilar in his first start with Tennessee. I’m very curious to see how this goes with Georgia now that they have shown they are willing to let Aguilar sling it.
Heupel is an awesome coach. Bottom line is Cuse could have played a lot better and people should be encouraged IMO.

Though I admit it starts with a much better effort and result Saturday.
Heupel really is an awesome coach. I saw somewhere that said that Heupel is what everyone thinks Steve Sarkisian is. And I pretty much agree. We should be encouraged because we didn’t look outmatched athletically and physically. But yeah Heupel and team for sure got the better of us on Saturday. This upcoming Saturday is a huge game for many reasons, but especially for our coaching staff. We have a talent advantage and it’s the first time our coaching staff is going up against a team they have faced before. We did win last time, but we all felt like Jim Mora is a genius given the fact we had a major advantages in many statistical categories and only won by 7.

So... many... missed... tackles. Yeah, the scheme wasn't great, but wow, slowing down the film like this really highlights how bad the missed tackles hurt this team. Eliminate these the game is so much closer.

The fear is that's much easier to say than to actually do. I don't think you fix tackling in one week
And honestly, for the money paid to the coaches who are supposed to teach it, the fact that it's still a problem after last year and the entire offseason when we had time to acknowledge and address it, makes me think it ain't gonna happen, for now.

It's called the Game 1 Yips :). Although Reese is like 35,

I think you have to bucket the freshman and guys getting their first real full speed in game experience at this level differently than those guys floating around the program for years that are Jr/Srs. Can they get better quickly, most of these guys are still teachable and I think will get there and fast.

As many have said McDonald and Sparrow and the PFF grades show there is no excuse, they're 23 years old. The guys that fall into that bucket, that's the problem, those guys just can't play that way.
