'Cuse Splits against Georgia Tech, Game Cancelled Tomorrow
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse softball team split 8-7, 6-4 in a 21-inning doubleheader against ACC foe Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon at Skytop Softball Stadium. The series wrap-up for Sunday, Apr. 3 has been cancelled due to foreseeable inclement weather.
The Orange (17-16, 4-7 ACC) and the Yellow Jackets (14-21, 3-8 ACC) battled it out in a 13-inning opening game and an eight-inning second game, with the first game just one inning shy of matching the longest game in Syracuse softball history.
Junior
Sydney O'Hara proved to be the star of the day, racking up three home runs and a double on the day. She drew a three-hit, six RBI effort in the first game and a two-hit, two RBI game in the second.
Senior
Jocelyn Cater earned the win in the first game, pitching the last 6.2 innings while racking up 15 strikeouts, just one K shy of her career high.
Junior
Alyssa Dewes accounted for three of the Orange's hits in the first game off of five at bats.
GAME 1
Georgia Tech put a run on the board early in the opening inning, after a leadoff double to left center, a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI single to left field brought in the Yellow Jacket at third to make it 1-0.
Syracuse answered back in the bottom of the third, as two doubles in a row by leadoff batter
Alyssa Dewes and
Sammy Fernandez sent Dewes home to knot it up at one apiece. Freshman
Aliyah Wade drew a base hit down the left field line to put her and Fernandez at the corners, before Wade got caught stealing. After senior
Corinne Ozanne walked to first and two outs were on the boards, O'Hara stepped up to the plate and sent one past the right field wall for a three-run homer to put 'Cuse on top 4-1.
In the top of the sixth, the Yellow Jackets pulled within one after a solo home run by Courtney Ziese and a subsequent double and base hit sent another one home to make it a 4-3 ballgame.
O'Hara started things off in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff homer to put the Orange at a two-run advantage, before the Yellow Jackets went on a hitting spree and registered four runs off of five hits in the top of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. Back-to-back home runs knotted the game up at five, before another two-run home run put Georgia Tech at a promising 7-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Syracuse didn't let the Yellow Jacket heat in the previous at bat stop them, as two Tech errors and a walk loaded up the bases, before O'Hara walked to draw in another RBI, bringing the Orange within one, 7-6. In the following at bat, a fly out and a subsequent error by the catcher sent
Danielle Chitkowski home to even in out at seven apiece and send the game into extra innings.
In the 13th inning, O'Hara sealed the deal with an RBI double after
Andrea Bombace drew a base hit to left field to cap an 8-7 Orange victory.
GAME 2
The Jackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, after an RBI base hit down the left field line and a subsequent two-run homer tallied three early runs for Tech.
Syracuse cut the Georgia Tech lead down to one in the bottom of the third, after two outs and two walks put sophomore
Kelsey Johnson and Ozanne on base. O'Hara's streak didn't stop after the first game, as the Cicero, N.Y. native drew a crucial base hit to left center to bring Johnson home. A wild pitch in the next at bat sent Ozanne home to bring the Orange within one, 3-2.
Under pressure with two outs on the board in the bottom of the seventh,
Sammy Fernandez tripled down the right field line, before pinch hitter Bombace doubled down the opposite line in the next at bat to force the game into extra frames.
The Yellow Jackets found their way in the top of the eighth, however, as a leadoff home run to center field by Colleen Darragh gave Tech a one-run advantage. A sacrifice bunt and a critical base hit up the middle sent two more home to give the Yellow Jackets a three-run advantage, 6-3.
O'Hara did not stop, as a leadoff home run in the bottom of the eighth brought the Orange within two, but proved to be Syracuse's final attempt, as a fly out and two strikeouts in a row sealed a 6-4 Georgia Tech victory.
Syracuse heads back on the road, matching up against local opponent Binghamton on Wednesday, Apr. 6, in a doubleheader match-up starting at 2 p.m.
