Observations from SU’s loss vs. Michigan: missed 3s, man to zone

Syracuse finished the first quarter on a 0-for-8 run and trailed 20-6 against Michigan, setting the tone for its first loss of the season.

I knew we were probably not going to win and hoped to only loose by 15, however I think ND lost by more than 30 to Michigan. This game will only make the team better going into conference play.

True we only had 10 assists vs Michigan’s 23. I’d like to see more cutting and movement without the ball on offense. Too many attempts at lobbing the ball inside while guarded instead of passing to aggressive cutters making the defense move and make decisions. The lobs underneath kept getting deflected or giving the defense time to double our inside player. Less initiating offense from the side next to the boundary instead of from the middle of the court. The players kept competing and should benefit from playing this game.

Michigan is really, really good. Team is getting better. Looking forward to seeing how they continue to progress.

Coach Jack is more of a defensive minded coach than an offensive one. They can get very scattered at times. Burrows shooting has been absolutely dreadful to start the season. It’s hard to explain. If it continues, Jack will need to find someone else who can put the ball in the basket.

Offensively has been down but if watch the game defensively, rebounding and deflections she is a big part of the team.

I’m a fan of hers but her shooting is critical to this team’s success going forward.

With excecption of the 1st quarter, we played them pretty close. They caught us with their press so that is something to work on. Thompson has a nice little mid-range around top of the key and would like to see her/Izoje with some high/low plays. Hopefully Burrows shooting improves before Jan.

Overall, good effort and we went 1-1 for the weekend.

If Uche can get a solid 12 to 15 jumper she is going to be dominant.

I like what I have seen from this team on the defensive side so far. The offense isn't very good because we just are not making shots1 Uche is going to be really good. I would like to see more of a 4 out offensive set with Uche as the only inside player posting from the low block. When she does post, it seems to be crowded inside. If the defense doubles or cheat inside, whoever that double down player is on defense, their man should be open. I thought we would be a better 3 point shooting team. Sophie Buckets needs to find her shot, Maddy Potts...they need to run some sets for her to shoot from 3, and I think the little guard from Statin Island, Schmidt, needs to get some more run, because she has a nice stroke from 3. Overall, defense will keep them in a lot of games...
