SU vs Niagara (108-84): Tues Nov 5, 7 PM

Ugly game but a good one for the Orange to get through. Niagara pressed the entire game which is really unusual. Getting leaned on, poked at, pressured all game is exhausting and exasperating to play against. SU coaches have plenty of film to target for improvements while also being happy that the women fought through it, kept their cool and worked hard to get this win. These types of games are always ugly. I hated playing against these type of teams, it’s tiring, frustrating, constant grind. We were sloppy - that Barnes girl from Niagara who doesn’t even start was extremely quick and we had a tough time keeping her in front of us. On rebounds we held the ball too long allowing the rebounder to be double teamed and our outlet passes need work. Georgia seemed to lose focus, be frustrated under the constant pressure and physicality until late in the game, we need a dialed in Georgia as a leader.

We actually shot the ball great - 60.3% fg% including 46.7% from 3 and 71.4% free throw %. Niagara shot 44%, 31.6% from 3 and 70.6% free throw %. Overall, we may have learned more about our team than if we beat them like we did teams in the exhibition game. Saw some very good things from some of our new talent in a pressure packed game. There is talent on this team. Just need to put it all together. Lots to work on still but the coaches now know much more from a game like this about our team, than a breezy win.

Agree with all of this. Great to see the team respond to a tough challenge. The next two games a just as tough. 28-6 saint joes and then ranked Maryland.

If injuries, the frenetic pace doesn’t wear them down - Niagara coaches have to be proud of their effort too. (Just noticed that 4 of Niagara’s players are from the same high school in Buffalo, Cardinal O’Hara, interesting. Wonder if they are a pressing team too.)

Looks like you know your Hoops...My concern as I see the makeup of this team, is the lack of athleticism on the team as a whole and on the the perimeter(Guards and wings especially). Other than Shy, who else would you call athletic and for that reason, she will play a lot this year. The top teams in women's hoops can throw some speed, athleticism, and physicality at you, that can completely take you out of your game. Niagara had a little guard, that wouldn't start on any ACC team, just run past all of our guards who attempted keep her out of the paint. Your thoughts?

Let the sports cliches begin
Yup, game's gonna look like that when one team presses for 40 and the other emphasizes forcing turnovers on defense. We were definitely sloppy with the ball at times, but it's game 1 of the season against an unusual scheme, those kinds of things can happen. If they keep that kind of turnover pace against St. Joe's and Maryland, then we can start worrying a little.

Like many players, they can show their athleticism more on offense than defense especially when young and adjusting to college game speed early in the season. Defense needs to be not just individual but a team effort - weak links like poor hedging, late helping, missed doubling etc can hurt the entire team. Getting back in defensive position not being flat footed can be a conditioning issue, lack of focus, the old ’I need to pace myself” etc especially if facing full court pressure offensively throughout a game.

I notice players sometimes running down court with their eyes forward losing track of the opponents, ball behind them and then turning and stopping, leaving them flat footed thus unable to adjust to quick moves that the opponent makes towards the basket. Coaches will address the defensive issues and hopefully find answers. Developing all the player’s ball handling and bb IQ, is key. Knowing to adjust to where the opponents are heading on offense can be more important than getting back quickly with your back to them and then trying to adjust. You need to be in good defensive position to react and keep them in front of you. Lots of new players In different roles than last year, new additions, and a player returning from a tough injury makes it difficult to assess if it’s a basic athleticism issue or normal adjustment period with all the changes this year. I don’t see a huge long jumping-jack blocking center who can erase defensive miscues but we haven’t had one in years and still been very successful. We’ll know more soon. Go SU!

Niagara was crushed by West Virginia yesterday 110 v 41. Scoring 84 against us, does not bold well for the season. Our lateral quickness on court is lacking and from watching other ACC teams, defense and ball handling will be issue all year.
