I wasn’t at the St Johns game so I have no idea what happened, obviously face-offs are a HUGE problem, I am not sure what the answer is here. I was wondering why they are not throwing Jenkins out there? He is a scrappy player they should at least try him out. From what I saw of the UVA game I have to say the wing play is a problem. UVA was able to dominate GBs, saw a lot of Cuse players standing around while UVA players got down low for GBs.
GBs & FO’s = possession so Cuse will hopefully spending a lot of time on both of these this week. Sounds like Megill was a good last resort but he is going to have his hands full with I would assume Palmer, so relying on him for another job might be asking too much. I might consider Harris on the wing at FO then dropping him down low??? He was the White heir apparent last year & did a good job, depending how fast he could drop back in that could be an option. My problem with all of this is Cuse may be young but they are supposed to be deep, they should be figuring out the LSM sooner than later. I would rely more on Fazio although at times McCartney is doing a good job he is inexperienced. Hopkins seems to be using both Reilly & Pellegrino at LSM which is probably even with Cuse LSM. I hope that Drew is ready for Sat I realize he wasn’t 100% at UVA but it seems he got that out of his system Sat, 2 goals, but not having seen the game was he getting back for defense on top of staying out on offense??? I thought Lehrmen was getting the full nod for SJU, I was hoping that Cuse would have that figured out going into this Hopkins game, defense is going to have stand on their heads with the JHU offense. SSDMs are going to have to make sure they are getting back, thought I read someone suggested having Lecky as a 2way middie, no way he may be quick but he is small, Ranagan could run right over him, trusting he would get back in transition is too much a risk. Drew is big & fast as is Moore I would stick with them.
As for the offense, Desko & Maltz are obviously Cuse’s scoring threats, I wouldn’t go as far as to say they are dodging threats. Desko will, I assume, draw Durkin & as long as Cuse keeps ball hot & unsettled Desko could exploit Durkin, settle ball down Durkin could eat him up. Maltz will have to keep moving, he seems to be the only cutter, he will need to catch & shoot as there will not be any time & room with this Hopkins defense they will smother the crease, good for Cuse that Maltz showed promise in the UVA game that he has increased range. Hopkins cannot turn away from him for even a second! That leads us to Palasek, yes he seems to go MIA for times but since this team seems to lean more toward middie iso with minimal off ball movement & cutting it takes him or any feeder out of the game, benching him not an option. From what I saw at UVA game he was able to make the defense move creating opportunities, Drew & Maltz both should have had multiple easy catch & shoot goals. Not to mention Palasek was wide open a few times but noone looks backside. Palasek needs to keep creating opportunites & things will start to finish, he also needs to shoot more. This game is personal for him so it will be interesting to see how he reacts. Marasco, on the other hand, has no problem shooting. He tries too hard to force the dodge & shoot. If he can dodge, draw & dump we would probably see higher % shots. We don’t necessarily need him to initiate shots from up top but initiate opportunity for this offense to keep the ball moving. The great thing about JoJo is that he is an attack/middie so he needs to use those attributes he has offensively/athletically to create from up top. Syracuse will need both Palasek & Marasco for the long haul so be patient it will happen for them. Lecky needs to also be more involved he could really benefit from the slides to Marasco. Like Maltz he will have no time & room to shoot so hopefully he will have opportunity to rip from up top on the run. Eillers needs to keep doing what he is doing, just knowing when to pull the trigger we do not need the middies playing catch with Bassett. I like what I see of Pratt, not afraid to attack the cage & shoot, I feel like Lecky & him could bounce between the 1st & 2nd lines. Barber is fundamentally sound I like when he is on the field, Ianzito could be a liability at times poor shot selection, slow & sloppy. Schoonmaker will get better & better as season goes on. I like the interchangeability of the 1st & 2nd lines. This is an interesting year as Cuse goes in as underdog I have faith in the Orange! HHH
