K-Train Permanently Off the Tracks?

I am not sure how committed the AD is to women's lax or what Kayla's contract situation is but there seems to be agreement among many well-respected former players that KT cannot repair the damage she has done to this program. Michelle Tumolo, the current coach at Army, is very highly regarded in the lacrosse community and SU's alumnae base and some are proposing her as an appealing replacement. It will be interesting to see if this gets any traction in the aftermath of this disastrous season following last year's disastrous off-season.

IMO, 95% of SU's focus right now is on making sure Fran and Red have all the resources they need.

At a minimum, she needs to hire an offensive minded assistant coach, and find a bag load of NIL money.

Maybe she's just too young. She needs to be the "bad cop" instead of being one of the girls.

Selection Sunday is May 4. It should be an uncomfortable day for her.

Scary thought that Clemson might be a Final Four team next season.

In my viewpoint, whatever happened last offseason, I don't see it being the prime reason we stunk this year. We didn't see a ton of transfers before this year and we had a number of highly rated freshman enroll. Olivia A., aside, we brought back Emma W, which was big. Some 5th years moved on, which happens. Missing the year before on the couple of transfers that went to BC seems more impactful, as they have been dominant players. No idea about Alexa S. and what happened there.

That said, Kayla needs to keep the team together this offseason, add some seasoned talent, (DC especially) and rework the offense. Can she do that, I hope so. I want her to be the coach for a long time and work her way out of this bad season.

if this team doesn’t fall apart in the offseason via the portal they will be an incredibly special group. The talent level is off the chart execution and consistency is not. The team looked amazing in the first half when they executed the game plan.

I have a chart ready to go with what next year's team might look like.

Usually I hold off posting it until the season is over.

Unless nobody cares about my superstitions.

It’s been next season since the VT loss for me. It is a BC and UNC show with the possibility of NW stealing some thunder there is no one below that that can compete without 1 of the 3 teams completely having a horrible day. My 2 biggest priorities in the offseason would be another DC specialist and a seasoned goalie possibly with 1-2 yrs of eligibility. I do not blame Daniel at all but she at the very least needs a capable backup. Hanlon made 0 saves in the little time she was in at all this season DC’s got much better especially last night but this season definitely highlights the importance of being competitive at the dot. The attack will be a work in progress with the loss of Ward and Spallina going to Clemson. Should Olivia come back it would be massive but I’m going into next season thinking she’s gone.

This team is missing an Alpha dog type player. they have always had it and they lack it this season
Olivia Adamson was that player and it would of elevated Ward’s game as well

I would say there are several potential alpha’s all have shown flashes Trinkhaus Cotter Volpe Vogleman of the first year players

Points against Kayla:
1). The team did not get better as the season progressed.
2). I wonder if the failure to hire additional coaches is a registration of KT's insecurity rather than any lack of resources.
3). KT missed out on a number of very high level upstate NY recruits last recruiting season- very worrisome if this is the beginning of a trend.
4). At best, KT seems to be a polarizing force among lax parents.
5). I think it is difficult to make the case that SU deserves to make the tournament this year. With the recent history of the program and the way in which women's lax is currently structured, there should never be a question about whether SU deserves to make the tournament.

There are 29 teams in the tournament SU is in the top 15 for RPI with #1 SOS by criteria they should be in even if we don’t think so. Have you talked to actual parents or are you going by what’s posted on message boards? The parents I have talked to have nothing but great things to say about her and the staff

I have spoken with parents, both inside and outside of the SU sphere- a very random sampling to be sure and I do not doubt there are a number of agendas at work. A surprising number of them have uncomplimentary things to say about KT.

Completely fair my sample size is small and I’m not sure a parent would completely throw shade at their daughters coach to a stranger. Like most things somewhere in the middle is where the truth probably is. Tons of unknowns .

The only number that matters is 9-8 and I think we fail the eye test for the NCAAs, we just don't have the look of a tourney team. I think we're on the outside looking in.
