In the last 20 or so years, dozens of SU basketball players left the program to try to find success elsewhere (and almost exclusively to lower tier programs).

Most of the players washed out at these other schools or had forgettable careers. Which players actually fared well after departing?

The only three that I can think of are:

Tony Bland
Bobby Lazor
BJ Johnson

Are there any others?

It doesn’t seem like anyone who left would have been a difference maker here had they stayed.

It appears that most of the players transferring out probably left because they were limited talent-wise and knew that their playing time was going to be minimal.

More than 20 years ago, but - Earl Duncan & Keith Hughes.

You don't think having Earl Duncan at PG instead of Stevie & Michael Edwards would have been a difference maker here??

That team was a legit PG (like Kenny Anderson) away from being an all-time great college squad.

Others who fared well elsewhere:
Richard Manning.
Glenn Sekunda.
Rock Lloyd.
Matt Roe.

Obviously it was a step down in competition but James Thues had a nice couple of years at Detroit-Mercy.

Cuse finished 7th the year Duncan transferred and 8th in the country his first year at RU. His scoring numbers wouldn’t have been as good at SU as he had DC, Billy, and Stevie taking most of the shots and each averaging 18 ppg. His assists would’ve been good though.

I still don’t like that with Duncan and Hughes going to RU we basically gave them their ticket to the tourney.

Anthony Harris averaged 22 ppg his last year at Hawaii.
Deshaun Williams averaged 14 ppg at Iona. (but would never argue that he should have stayed at SU)

The current transfer situation is vastly different than what we are used to.

I fully expect Kadary to be one of the most successful transfers out that we have ever had.

That being said, we’ll see plenty of highly successful transfers coming in too. It’s just the nature of the beast these days.
