SUMB to Pitt - Crowdfunding?

When I was in the band about a hundred years ago, we took trips to Penn State, BC, Maryland and Pittsburgh. I really don't know how the trips were funded.

I received an email today asking for donations to fund a trip for the SUMB to the Pitt game.

I hope they get to go, but am a little irked that this isn't just part of the annual budget. Should I be?
I gave them a little something to help make this happen. It is rare to get to see the SUMB perform at an away game and I want to do what I can to support it.

If the money isn't raised, I assume the kids won't get to go. It isn't their fault and I am not going to take it out on them if SU was a little cheap on this...

But to the OP's point, its kinda shitty that SU can't spread some of this newfound ACC gravy to the marching band...

Its kinda like if the cheerleaders had to fundraise for new uni's.

look, i have nothing against the marching band...NOTHING, but paying to send them to pitt is pretty GD low on my list of how i want the $$ i sent to the school spent.

i think theyre all on scholarship, have their parents send $100 to get it done.

its the least they can do since theyre saving 60k a year...

Big time schools send their bands to away football games.

All on scholarship huh? Think again. Either that or where do I sign up for my tuition rebate?

Marching band members at some institutions receive a small stipend (like $500), but they are not "on scholarship". In fact, a majority of marching band members are not even music majors. The stipend represents a token compensation for missing 10-14 of days work at the end of the summer while at band camp, giving up 7 Saturdays in the fall (like the players, the band members convene hours before the kickoff), time spent at other required appearances (alumni events, etc.), instrument repairs, etc.

well thats good.

all this time i thought the school was missing out on 100 or so students tuition $$.

but i did think it was a big deal to 'make' the band and i thought they were given some type of scholarship. one that would be kept based on grades and performance etc.

they should go to 1 game a year and it should come out of some athletic fund.

I am sorry but I give every year to the university, have 4 season FB tickets have probably have 40 yrs of donating to the orange club and donated a little for the new uniforms and now the university wants me to send money so THEIR band can take a short trip to Pittsburgh.
I think not.
The university should be ashamed for sending this out. What an insult to the band and past members.

our hockey band goes to most away games, they fully fund it them selves i believe. what would a road game to pitt cost if you drove 4-5 to a car and to a room for one night?

They definitely aren't on scholarship. In fact I know that they have some kids from other local schools (OCC, Lemoyne etc) on it too. People are right - SU should support their band more, bet they'd get more students willing to take the time and effort to join.

The new uniforms I sort of got, as that was a capital improvement. This is different. It's an operational expense. One regular season road trip a year (plus bowl) should just be the norm.

Unless times have changed, there's no stipend.

I agree with that. I actually think they should go to most if not all road games.

i dont want some other schools band playing their shlit in my house and i would expect they likely think the same.

1x a year is fine and it should be a perk for making it.

although, the school just 'organized' buses back in the day, and as a student i still had to pay out of pocket for both bus & ticket.

at least thats how it was for ped st in '88. the other roadies i made were by car and of course, a purchased ticket.

Seems like we get other bands in the Dome.

I agree. The ND game at Metlife would make a lot of sense. It will be a high-profile, nationally televised contest, and the cost would be contained by traveling by bus and not needing overnight accommodations.

BTW, I have no idea if the SUMB members receive a stipend or how much. I was simply relating what my kids experienced at other institutions.

Pretty sure Orange Girl has to design and pay for her uniform herself...

SUMB should go to every game and should have more Tubas aka sousaphones.
I am for everything that makes for a big time CFB experience. Send some freakin money -doesn't have to be lot. I'll send $44.

you wouldn't want to be at the Carnegie-Mellon pizza shop and watch them flip the pennant right side up:)

I can't remember the last road band to play in the dome. Did Clemson bring their band last year? I know I remember Pitt but that was probably 3 or 4 years ago.

Clemson brought there band alright. They played that god awful fight song a lot.

It's been a while since I lived in the area and had season tickets, but I remember a number of teams bringing their bands. Whenever I watch big games of other schools, it's common to see (hear) the away team's band. I think it's common for the "football" schools to take their bands to at least away conference games. If we wanna be mentioned with those types of schools, we need to too. Don't dress for the job you have. Dress for the job you want.
