If Bad Boys Produce, Off Field Problems Will be Forgotten (Buffalo News; Sullivan)
Sports fans have a seemingly infinite capacity for forgiveness. The fact came crashing home when Milwaukee fans gave Ryan Braun a standing ovation in his first game back from a steroid suspension. As a local reminder, Sabres fans did the same for their prodigal son, Dominik Hasek.
Given a little time, they’ll forget almost any transgression. Fans are zealots. The word derives from “fanatic”. Modern fans don’t require their heroes to be model citizens or scholars. In the end, they want to attach themselves to greatness, and they want their teams to win.
So I imagine Bills fans are taking the more optimistic approach with the team’s recent high-profile, high-maintenance acquisitions. They know Mike Williams and Brandon Spikes have more baggage than a traveling circus. But can they make it happen on the football field?
It’s worth taking a shot. No NFL locker room is without its dubious characters nowadays. One team’s castoff can become another team’s unearthed treasure, its rehabilitated star. A lot of pro athletes begin their careers as arrested adolescents. Various Super Bowl Bills come to mind...

Villanova Eager to Open Season Against Syracuse (vuhoops.com; rsaccoma2016)
- Jamal Abdur-Rahman (SO, WR) looked in prime shape after redshirting his freshman year.
- Both Kevin Monangai (JR, RB) and Austin Medley (JR, RB) had strong showings this morning. The two are most likely sharing the load of carries this season.
- Javon White (SO, RB) had a 30-yard run up the sideline. He could see a fair share of touches and increase his load as his confidence increases.
- The team looks to fill Dan Shirey's spot in the roster. Dan was the remaining player from the 2009 championship team.
- 3rd string QB Cody Pittman (SO) put in a lot of great throws today, including a fade route towards the sideline during the second scrimmage.
- John Robertson (SO, QB) took some throws, however was not in pads. He is currently recovering from a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder. He threw seldom, however running the ball is still his strong suit. On many occasions he would tuck the ball in and run up the gut, getting past linebackers each time.
- The Wildcats are eager to open their season in upstate NY against the Syracuse Orange. The Orange ended last season with a Texas Bowl win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
