Florida as a recruiting territory and retrenching to closer to Syracuse.

New England as a bigger target? Not sure that's a great idea.

They just announced the new coach is covering Florida.

I dont see it as much of a change. We hired Bob to get us back into NJ and he is doing a great job. NJ and the other eastern states are in our zone but i believe we will continue to find talent on a nation wide basis. I see the southern states in general being a new target and one that we are doing well with. Georgia, Alabama, Florida have all been very good to us lately. Add IL and OH and we have some great states to pull from. There is zero reason that Syracuse cant recruit on a national level and this staff is doing a great job expanding our reach.

I know, I read the article.
So they have 1 coach who has Florida as his main territory, Lester has that area that he's worked for a few years and then you have Shafer to come in when needed. Seems like that's the same as before just without McDonald and his reputation.

I read the article and it sounds like the same answer I've heard for years. I guess I didn't interpret it as a serious shift in strategy.

Focus on the states around NY, and add in some prime recruiting areas in the south (mainly Florida) and sprinkle in some national if our coaches have a connection (Midwest, Deep South).

Going to be interesting to see how this works out. I just don't think you can throw a guy down there that has no prior ties to the area. I just don't get why you don't hire a coach (like Acosta) who has roots in the area they will be recruiting. Look at the South Florida kids WVU was able to pull because they hired the Miramar HC. If only we had a So Florida HS HC with ties to Syracuse.

Go...sad to read but reality. We have no real "go to" recruiter in FL right now. I imagine they still hit up the schools they know. Hopefully Moreland has some contacts down there. I know Shafer does. I see us getting our Big Uglies from Chicago, OH and the NE. I worry about the speed.

Somehow, some way they've landed a few kids from Georgia and have built some nice connections down there. I hope they continue to do that.

Adkins started that with Lynch and Curtis. Not sure which current staff member has kept it going. SU has a growing Admissions presence in Atlanta, so there should be ways to keep hitting the area.

I didn't really read that there would be much of a change at all.

just because mcdonald was bad about calling plays and talking to the press doesn't mean we need to do the opposite of everything the guy wanted to do

i've been worried about speed ever since they went all in on midwest coaches and TE

we will be fine. George didnt exactly set the world on fire in Florida.

Are we sure about that? Estime/Hodge/Ishmael/Hudson/Dowels/Enoicy/Avant/Batten seem to be guys this team is counting on next year.

Is there a P5 team that can be competitive without a group of recruits from Florida, Texas, or Cali?

What do you sense is different?

Acosta said that the staff's main focus will be on mining the Northeast — New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut, among other states —

We're probably a little more focused on New England."

What is now the "main focus" is different than in the recent past. If they included Florida in that list then you have the areas that Mac and P focused on. Leaving Florida out of the main group is worrisome.

And maybe it goes without saying, but where is New York in all of that?

i keep reminding myself, their focus could be on mars, it's only for another year

I took it to mean they're offering more kids in New England - CT/MA specifically - which isn't a bad thing, there's some players there and we haven't recruited New England since the coach P days. We've gone there 2 years in a row now.

IMHO, we need to recruit heavily in the 'radius' and supplement with the outlier states - FL, GA and wherever else. Speed is speed it doesn't matter where it comes from. The only advantage of the southern states I see is kids play football year round so they tend to be more ready.

The history of the program being successful is the states Daoust named. I didn't read the article and think we're de-emphasizing anything. Lester recruits Tampa and Moorehead will go to South FL. Shafer himself recruited Florida for Marrone. I don't know who recruits Orlando.

According to rvls we have 36 offers out to NY, MA, CT, NJ, PA and OH.

6 out in Florida

7 out in Georgia

7 out in Illinois/Michigan/Missouri

8 out in MD, TX, CA, NC, AL

**When this staff initially was not focused on NY, NJ, PA and NE they got slammed for it. Now they're getting slammed for re-emphasizing it?

he didn't recruit hodge but point taken. Estime has contributed and won a game. Ishmael is a star. The rest are TBD. He brought in some quality players for sure that can't be denied. He had marginal players lined up last year before he bailed. He only brought in 1 bonafide star (to date) and I think that's the poster's point. The players he mainly brought in are the same players that can be mined by others.

I do think Enoicy will be a stud and Avant will be a big player down the road. But I tend to agree McDonald's recruiting can be replaced.

A better record will lead to better recruiting no matter what.

Good point. George did bring is some quality players no doubt. My point is that Bobby in his first year did equally as well in NJ if not better. We will be fine. SU will always get recruits out of Florida as we have been recruiting the state forever and have a very strong Alumni base. The ACC only helps and with the IPF and i hope to gosh a bowl this year we should do as well as George did if not better.

It seems that the only people interpretting the article to mean that SU won't be recruiting FL are the posters who want Shafer gone. The current staff is still recruiting FL as has already been pointed out. McDonald's success/failure in that area is TBD.

PhatOrange I would have to say that Rovals is a little light on the number of offers out. Looking at the database on here there are roughly 90 offers out and of those over 50 are NJ, NY, PA, MA, CT...28 in NJ alone.

Good lord.

Recruiting NJ aggressively is awesome. Having Acosta on the staff was a great move by Shafer. Some of the greatest players we've ever had came from NJ and we used to have a stronghold on that state.

If a player is good enough, they will be found regardless of their location. Football in the northeast is nothing compared to what it is in the southeast, but there are still a boatload of talented, athletic kids up here. Staff's job to find them and get them to sign.
