Fran Brown Bounce-Back
– Brown has established a culture where his teams don’t let one loss turn into two. He’s 4-0 after a defeat as a head coach, and the guys rally around him. That resilience is contagious and gives SU an edge in games like this. You have to go back to 2021 as an assistant coach to find a time he lost back to back game.

Special Teams Edge
– Stonehouse is one of the best punters in the country, averaging nearly 47 yards a boot. He flips the field and forces opponents to drive 70–80 yards. Woody has been steady on field goals (6/7). In a tight game, that hidden yardage and reliable kicking could be the difference.

Willis Workload
– Yasin Willis is averaging 74 yards per game and 4.7 yards a carry, but he’s only getting about 11 carries. When he gets touches, he breaks tackles and forces defenses to creep up. More Willis means keeping SMU honest, setting up play action, and wearing down their front.

Emerging WR Depth
– Emmanuel Ross is finally healthy and showing flashes. With him alongside young talent stepping up, defenses can’t key on a single receiver. The more weapons SU has available, the less predictable the offense becomes — and that’s critical against an aggressive SMU secondary.

Deslauriers Disruption
– Freshman LB Antoine Deslauriers has already turned heads. Last game he recorded 5 tackles, a TFL, and a sack, showing he can make plays at every level. He’s got the speed to spy a QB and the energy to blitz effectively, which can be a big problem for SMU’s offense.

Penalty Advantage
– SMU is averaging 8 penalties a game, one of the sloppier marks in the nation. Syracuse, meanwhile, has been more disciplined. In a game where every possession matters, that could mean SU getting an extra 30–40 free yards just by playing clean.

Time of Possession
– Syracuse is built to control the ball. With Willis pounding inside and short passing to keep chains moving, SU can shorten the game and keep SMU’s veteran QB on the sidelines. Fewer possessions mean more pressure on SMU to capitalize when they do have the ball.

1-0 vs. SMU All-Time

We aren’t playing a ground control kind of game. Haven’t seen that yet. Won’t see it this weekend. It’s Collins ride or die.

Wow great job.

I started to write one the other day, got closer to man tears than I'd ever care to admit, and gave up wondering how SWC always managed to power through after big losses. Anyway you covered most of what I was going to say and more, but I still got one more to salvage from what I'd done.

The Texas Trap
When big appear small, when small appear big. SMU just came off the 2nd most difficult game of their schedule--Dallas Rival TCU--and is probably beat. This part of their schedule is quite downhill, and whatever tape they see of our Duke game is not going to give them pause. This may not be a conventional trap game, but I just don't see them appreciating what we're truly capable of if we can put together a legit game.

If we can control the ground on 1st down and make easy passes for him. That was my point.
I think we have to bring that into play.

Well said and thanks. I make sure to put alot of care and thought into these, it's the respect it deserves.

Cause llandz will be there, and we have won at least the last 7 games I have attended, and the streak may even be longer than that. I'd have to go back 3 or more years and my mind is too old and feeble for that task.

2024 NC State. Grass field. Defense gives up 17 pts.
2025 Clemson. Grass field. Syracuse beat Clemson, giving up 21 points.
2025 SMU. Syracuse beats SMU?

Just wondering if our defense plays better on grass. Does it slow down offensive plays just a hair? Is it easier to tackle with zeal on grass? All I know is that we were in better position to tackle and made more consistent tackles against Clemson.

I see that from the other side of the coin. Indoor stadiums are an advantage for offense because there's minimal wind/sun/etc. getting in your way and the turf is more consistent for breaking your routes.

I don't know if Fran is using this for recruiting or not--I'd guess he is--but if you're a WR or QB or mobile TE, air raid + Dome is a great combo.

Interestingly, back when the dome was inflated it added another dimension for kickers as high balls could catch the draft.
