The '74 team had more talent but the '75 team went to the final four.
My point is that after the next 60 days, when our portal gets are in the bank, we won't know
how well these guys will or won't play together.

furthermore, red hasnt shown in his 2 seasons that he can make 1 + 1 = 3

he has been more 1 + 1 = 1.5 or something (to the extent that people are questioning the talent instead of the coaching)

EXTREMELY slow starts in nov and december have basically rendered conference play irrelevant

can he get a team to hit the ground running? Im very doubtful thus far...

That is a combination of coaching and chemistry.

It has been interesting to read about both Pitino and Hurley talking about recruiting certain types of guys and avoiding others - so chemistry is clearly really important. Probably not as important as great coaching but clearly matters.

I will say this, in this NIL portal world it is much more difficult to be synergistic when putting together a team.

The portal makes it much more likely for most players to be "one and done" for that school as they all look for a bigger bag at season's end. Lack of continuity leads to lack of synergy.

The NIL thing makes it a zero sum game for the players. The NIL budget is fixed for the most part, so $25k more for one player translates into 25k less for the rest of the team. There is a pecking order now much more appreciable than the previous bag under the table deals that are kept quiet. I wonder if the players might see some of their teammates as NIL adversaries.

And yet there is still a "Top 25" and good teams rise, often quickly, to win games out of the box and grab those spots.

Nowadays, good coaches coach effective, basic, modern game plans that don't require half a season+ to implement effectively or require repetitive long amounts of game time for players to gel and get effective. They get their "team" to play as a team and tune out the competing nil bags and competing dramas that can arise.

No one says it's easy, but it's not some ridiculously complicated enigma that we can't possibly figure out either... At least for the right coach.

But Red should have a basic idea of how certain guys would fit together.

An obvious mistake this year was having our 2 guys in our starting backcourt that couldn’t shoot 3s. But this shouldn’t have been a surprise….

Lampkin and Davis have never been rim protectors in college. I don’t think they expected Donnie to be much of one either. They knew Bell and Starling were subpar perimeter defenders. Maybe Red was expecting more from McLeod. But this was a major issue this year that we easily saw coming.

We didn’t have enough varying skill sets this year. Red has to do better t at that this time

We’ll know real fast in Vegas this Thanksgiving. If we come back that week with no wins in an 18 team tourney you can bet your butts well know.

Fair. That’s where coaching comes into play. And we won’t have a lot of time with the schedule.

Yup, MCW nailed it. And honestly, it even happened again last night. Eddie was 5-6 about 8 minutes into the game. Then he was 5-6 for the next 32 minutes after that. We won and it all worked out, but he should have had more than 6 shots in the last 32 minutes!

We will know whether we will be awful again or have a shot.

Anyone who has a pulse could tell the portal additions weren’t enough last summer.

Problem is, half the people on here either have Orange colored glasses or have sources inside the program that are blind too.

Either way, if Council from Bonaventure, Stanford from Temple, and a forward that can create their own shot are part of the equation, we have a chance to be on the bubble. We will be able to tell.
