Syracuse at GTown 2003 Replay - on ACCN now

Miscellaneous thoughts:

-Sooooooo many SU fans at Verizon Center that day
-I always thought Sweetney would have a long NBA career
-I loved how we pressed a lot in the second half even when the score was close
-Forth seemed to play very well this game
-Man things would have been so different with four full years of Edelin
-Maybe it’s my imagination, but I feel like despite being the greatest free throw shooter in program history, GMac missed a disproportionate amount in critical late game situations
-Gtown’s brief experimentation with white uniforms was dumb.
-Craig Esherick always looked more like a CPA than a basketball coach to me

I remember a big SU comeback in this one.

Feel like Edelin had a huge hoop late in the game, possibly off a steal?

Carmelo had a huge two handed dunk on the break with two defenders nearby.

Was this also the game that GTown hit a buzzer beating 3 to put it into OT?

Was at this game. Lots of SU fans. It was loud and crazy when SU made the comeback.

In fairness to sweetney he would have if he didn't eat the other 4 guys on the court.

non stop Intensity from the fans, big time event. Center of the basketball world
Truly. SU-Gtown was the biggest game in college basketball for a good chunk of the 80s, really a bigger deal than Carolina-Duke. All the high school kids wanted to play in the Big East in those days, especially from the major east coast cities. I was a kid at the time, but I was that ‘85 Gtown game in the Dome, and I’ll never forget those oranges hitting the backboard!

Addison is one of my favorite players of all time.
Loved Raf. Felt terrible that his senior year got derailed by an injury (was it a knee?). He really struggled the second half of his senior season, but fortunately Pearl and Wendell Alexis stepped up.

Ankle.

Len Berman said at the end of the ‘85 game that he got to broadcast a Super Bowl and a World Series and Cuse-Gtown absolutely matched that.
An all-time great sports rivalry.
Gotta keep it going...despite the turn that has the Orange in a conference where they don't really fit in.

I LOOOOOOAAAATHE G-TOWN!

JB was ahead of his time with big wings who could shoot (Alexis and Raffy). Andre Hawkins skill set was also better than I remember and Derek Brower coming in and looking like he belonged...add that to Forth and McNeil in the 03 game and I gotta say, we miss Bernie.

Also Thompson was lucky he coached in the 80's. If he didn't adapt who he recruited they wouldn't score 40 points today with their lack of shooting ability.

I watched both the 03 and 85 games last night--some comments on the 85 game:
-With no 3-pt line, few shots were taken from far out. If Greg Kohls had still been around, that would have been different. The game sure has changed.
-Players still took the spot along the lane near the baseline when foul shots were being taken.
-The guy who used to drive to all the games from Connecticut (?) was there behind the bench handing out water. He did that for many years.
-It was fun catching names on the backs of bench players who never saw the floor (e.g., Howard Triche).
-You could see the potential in Rony when a freshman. He blossomed into one of my favorite players of all time.

Wasn’t it an eye injury?

Regarding the 1985 SU/Gtown game that I watched yesterday, pre three point line basketball was before my time. The strategy is just so much different. It almost feels like you're watching lacrosse or hockey in how they move the ball around trying to get as close as possible before taking a shot since there's no advantage to being further out.
