Syracuse University Athletics continues to demonstrate its commitment to academic excellence, as shown in the latest release of NCAA Academic Progress (APR) data. The University earned a single-year score of 989 (out of 1,000) for the 2023-24 cohort – the highest score achieved in the past-four years.

Syracuse's score of 989 is once again above the national average and marked the 13th-straight year with an APR score of 982-or-better.

In addition to the overall department success, 11 teams earned a perfect single-year APR score of 1,000, including: women's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, women's ice hockey, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, women's soccer, softball, men's track and field, women's track and field and volleyball. It's the seventh-straight year that Syracuse has seen at least four of its programs receive perfect APR scores.

The NCAA also tracks multi-year APR scores, with volleyball achieving a perfect 1,000 for the sixth-consecutive year to lead all programs. Women's basketball, women's cross country, and women's lacrosse also received perfect multi-year scores.

ill say it out loud... as long is it doesnt hurt us, i dont care at all about APR scores nor teams doing better than others.

not even a little.

That’s refreshing honesty that some are not willing to admit. I’ll join you. I don’t care about APR. If they all get D- for grades I’m fine with it if it means they stay eligible to play.

Syracuse football worst in the ACC in academic achievement.

I don't know how much this matters, or if I should care about it or not, but it is, according to one measure:

The 958 is a 4 year rolling average which covers the period from 2020-21 to 2023-24.

Dino's last 4 years.

I expect to see an improvement next year when Fran's first season gets added in.

The APR score is computed with each student eligible for 2 points. One point is awarded for staying in school and another for being eligible. The teams score achieved is divided by the total eligible points and multiplied by 1000.

So basically all it means is that Babers teams had a real problem with staying academically eligible.

Whatever happened to the student athlete!? … but then again, I don’t care if the all get Ds in basket weaving as long as they can entertain me.

Hypocriticism runs strong in this thread.

So UNC is #1 on that list huh. I'm getting all that this means is UNC can find ways to keep all of their kids eligible, weather that is adding bogus classes or majors who knows? That doesn't mean their kids are excelling in the classroom. This metric seems rather pointless as a stand alone stat.

It's fair to say that the student-athletes themselves have broadcast that it's really an athlete-student setup, and it's all about the Benjamins. Opens up a whole new realm of criticism, and how they should be regarded by fans, IMO.

Not really only because one or two athletes shouldn't paint the whole of the student-athlete, no matter how ineffectual the NCAA may have become. Why do we want to share the values of UNC with fake classes, or Ohio State's Cardale Jones, "Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS"?

Maybe Syracuse University is trying to be different from that, and maybe they are trying to stay in step with what THEY see as peer institutions, or the correct path. Fran has said himself that he expects more from his student athletes, and that they will have a 6 figure job in their major lined up within 40 days of graduating. I endorse this thinking. I like it as a culture, and I think it will draw in recruits. I see a lot of parallels to this and the AW vs SU arguments.

Agree that SU appears to be trying to do it differently, but the big picture remains, and I'm waiting to see how far we "bend the rules" when it matters, if it comes to that. I'm curious if the team's chosen majors, in aggregate, look different now. Didn't Fran say he would like folks to graduate in 3 years? That is a tall order, admirable but tall.

And I'm still jaded about the whole "student athlete" thing in the abstract, having championed the "student" portion of it for years and years.

These are 1 year mercenaries. Does it even matter anymore. I would say not at all

Don’t disagree. More alarming is that when Babers was here either 20 kids on avg either dropped out, or some 40 were academically ineligible, or some combination. Those numbers are alarming.

But but but he was building the program the right way...SMH
