Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud this morning said there's been no decision on whether longtime assistant baseketball coach Mike Hopkins will succeed Jim Boeheim.

SU has long said publicly that Hopkins would be the next head coach whenever Boeheim stepped down. It's no longer the case that he's a lock for the job, Syverud said.

"This is not the time to answer that question," Syverud told Syracuse.com in a phone interview.

When it was announced Wednesday that Jim Boeheim intends to retire in three years, Hopkins' name was not included in Syverud's statement.

Attempts to reach Hopkins have been unsuccessful...

This was predictable. Will be an interesting three years.

If not now, WHEN???

After a new Athletic Director is hired. Nothing against Hopkins, who has done the heavy lifting in the program for a decade plus. But a new AD is [1] probably going to want to put his stamp on the hire, and [2] not going to feel bound by any strategies enacted by his departed predecessor, who was forced to resign to avoid being fired.

This could get ugly.

Hop isn't guaranteed the job.

JB stays beyond three years.

Interesting.

Big mistake, IMO.
Loyalty is a 2 way street, and if there's nothing in the sanctions directly implicating Hop, then there's no reason why he shouldn't get his shot after waiting all these years.
Moreover, imagine what some of these recruits are thinking right now, and how much ammo you just gave our competitors on the recruiting trail? The whole idea is to maintain stability, not inject an element of doubt in the program.
FAIL.

The Chancellor would or could go over the new AD head and give it to Hopkins.

Anyway. SU new AD hire will prob be somebody with Syracuse U ties.

That is a concern. Because say JB does step down after 3 years, how can you recruit? and who will be bale to recruit with no coach.

Or someone from Vanderbilt.

It's the chancellors way of saying "the University is bigger than its basketball team" - a very important message to the public and academic side of things.

I'd bet that they told Hop that they need to do this and that they hold him in very high regard.

That's the most Bull spit thing I've seen in 30 years, and especially because it comes from our people...

Syverud needs to follow Gross's ass right out the door. Mr. Egghead can't be trusted. He has no SU ties. No SU history. He has no sports background and has shown no love of sport. He has no SU loyalties. To date we know that Mr. Egghead meets with Professor's who call for people to be fired and guess what? The next day Gross and JB are out. Not a great sign of thing to come for the athletic department.
But to throw Hopkins under the bus? That is OUTRIGHT DIRTY DEALING. It has long been established he would be the next head coach. I think FANS are going to be upset and I think RECRUITS will be headed elsewhere.

I, like everyone else, don't believe that Hop hag anything to do or have any knowledge of the impropriety. However, the obvious perception of announcing Hop as the next HC is "nothing has changed. Hop is a protégé of Beoheim. SU didn't take the charges seriously and make enough changes". Syverud has to consider the public perception of giving Hop the keys. As much as i hate to think and say it, I'm going on record that Hop will not be the next head coach.

I guess I am not as high minded and I am not sure if a lot other fans or boosters or recruits will be as high minded. I think we are seeing a new Chancellor who is running amok.

Then they better get moving on the succession plan because recruiting isn't going to be pretty the next few years with only two guys who can leave campus to recruit and with everyone they talk to knowing that they both already have one foot out the door.

Honestly, this sort of thing leaves a sour taste in my mouth. What does it say when you've had a guy like Hop who has been absolutely as loyal to the University and the program as could be, turning down head coaching gigs along the way, because he was promised the job here...only now, that promise is suddenly looking extremely shaky?

I'm in favor of rewarding loyalty in a situation like this. I'll be extremely irritated if Hop isn't our next coach. I have no idea what kind of game coach he'll be, and frankly he may end up being a not so great coach. But he's earned the chance, dammit.

The new chancellor should be fired? Is that what you are trying to say? Really? Syverud could NOT have handled this better.

I wonder what color the sky is in your world...

My opinion is that Mike Hopkins will be the guy but that the chancellor is following the proper chain of command here, leaving that decision to the new AD, which is where it belongs.

I suspect an important question for prospective new ADs is what would you do with the HC situation we currently have at Syracuse? The answer to that question is going to be important.

There are a lot of variables here:

Will the probation affect Mike's attractiveness as a HC? He was not implicated in any way, so in theory, it should not. But in reality, it surely will make him a less attractive candidate.

I think if Mike gets a good opportunity elsewhere, he should take it. If that happens, I hope he negotiates a buyout clause that makes it easy for him to come back home someday.

The key for him is to see what the new AD has in mind for him. Will he be given a contract to lock him in as the next SU HC? Will he at least be given enough compensation so it doesn't hurt him financially to stay loyal for 3 more years to the school he has served so well for so long?

There will be interesting times on the hill over the next few months, that much is for certain...

Which certainly doesn't seem likely, given his remarks in the article that is the subject of this thread.

Syracuse ties are overrated. Get the best coach you can. Period. Having a connection to the program is a nice to have, not a need to have.

In my opinion we hired a Georgetown lawyer and one who has failed to impress the NCAA. From everything I have read, SU's appeals fell flat, with a THUD, did more harm than good, and worse, some say we have very little grounds for appeal, based on past arguments we have made. I admit that I am an Su sports fan, and really don't care about the biology department or if a math professor is upset about Univ. priorities.
Plus, again, it has been said in the past, that Hopkins would be the next coach. So I don't think the Eggheaded Georgetown lawyer is handling this well by leaving Hopkins twisting in the wind.
