Syracuse gets record payout from ACC, which still lags behind other P-5 conferences

Nice dig, P-S. Why I don’t click onto your site for sports articles any more.

What's the dig? The fact that the ACC received the least amount of money out of comparable conferences? God forbid they state a fact!

Honey, I got a big raise!

Good for you. The neighbors still make more.

By choosing what facts to include, especially in the title or gloss, they set the tone. I don’t want to hear the BUT BUT on a story like this. What purpose does it serve?

I’m sick of the defeatism and I’m done with it. They can pound sand.

They could have said Clemson gets lowest conference champ payout in p5...below the average payout in the other 4 conferences.

The athletic department makes more money by far than it ever has, yet the major sports teams are more mediocre than they have been in 30+ years.

How weird that it coincides so perfectly with an increase in SoS... like the new conference is harder to compete in or something.

We could be UCONN man. Struggling in a crappy conference with no real hope.

Sure, that makes sense. But it doesn't make the fans more happy. But please don't compare Syracuse to UCONN. Their whole rise was on the Orange's coat tails. They should be the king in the AAC, but the state of Connecticut is a economic disaster.

No - if UCONN gets that invite over us - we’re falling off a cliff. I’ll take the increase in competition and more money every day, all day. The BE as it was doesn’t exist. Standing pat wasn’t a choice.

A point to remember is that other conferences share other pots of money. I.e. The B1G partially shares the gate revenue (Rutgers is a big winner here!). All payouts are not equal in terms of what is included.

UConn was not getting an invite before SU. To any conference. Ever.

I'm happy the athletic department has more revenue to work with.

No problem with that article at all. It was a reporting of facts. Seemed like actual journalism to me.

I still don't see how anyone other than the schools is making money on this. The networks have to be losing a ton of cash.

The networks aren't in the business of pissing cash away. We'll see how much they are and expect to be making when the AAC contract expires in a couple years. If Aresco can increase per team, per year pay-outs to $5 million plus you'd have to figure business is pretty good.

Even if it means a tougher schedule and conference competition? That's the tradeoff that started this conversation, I think.

That's definitely true for football. Basketball is about the same as it was in the big east.

The money is a red herring if your not going to use it to compete at the P5 level and that means going against the big dogs and all their resources. I don't see a big appetite for that, so, other than bball with JB (as long as he remains coach), it seems to be middle of the pack outlook for SU sports.

“ I just won a million bucks”!
“ Yeah, but what about your taxes- they’re gonna be ridiculous”!

Exactly this. You wanna emphasize the ACC is last in P5 revenue, no problem at all. But as part of your screaming headline...maybe not so much. JMHO

I don’t think the reason our football team is mediocre is solely a lack of funding. The job of the ACC money is to spend it wisely to build to where you’re competing for championships.

Babers has a competitive salary, we’ve added a bunch of staff, etc. Wildhack hasn’t been here for very long. I’m not sure we can really make a judgement yet.

UCONN was good - but no modern day Duke or UNC, IMO.

Are you forgetting when the Big East sent 5 teams to the elite 8 or 3 to the final four? The 2004 UConn team we couldn't beat was every bit as good as the Duke teams we've played since joining the ACC and UConn beat a favored Duke team in '99 for the NC. We were only the 4th best team in the Big East in '96 when we gave that loaded Kentucky team all it wanted in the final. The Big East was always tough top to bottom whereas the ACC has always been and still probably is more top heavy, if less so than pre-expansion. Don't become a victim of the moment and short change the old Big East simply because we aren't there anymore.
