Syracuse Hoops - Current Advanced Metrics from EvanMiya

Stats tell me JJ is the weak link of the top 5 both on offense and defense, which is something I could already see without the stats. Red wanted JJ. I thought JJ should stay if he was going to be number 6 or 7 and not playing 28.9 minutes per game. But who can you replace him with given the roster?

Idk how all of the stuff posted works, but based on his inclusion in each of the ‘best lineups,’ he’s the weak link but the best of the weak link options.

Edit: looks like somebody beat me to that point

My argument wasn't with Starling being a weak link at times this season. It is empirically correct. He is bad defensively most of the time, and has periods on offense where it looks like he has internalized the incorrect "Starling is a ball hog and a gunner" criticism and is trying to prove his detractors incorrect.

It was with this group of stats supporting that argument. I do not agree that Maya's stats listed above support the argument that Starling is the problem with our team. I am not even sure it supports the argument he is the worst of our starters, though that may be the case (White is worse, but out of Freeman, Kyle, George, Starling and Kingz, who would you pick last?).

I think some of Maya's stats don't make sense, but I don't necessarily think we should throw all his work out...

Yes, I'd like to know more about his metrics, because they deliver some insights, but other times his "findings" don't pass the smell test.

For instance, while Anthony has been poor for several games, he started the season quite well, so I'm surprised to see him dead last in offensive rating, worse than even Zephir, who is a pretty decent defender, but doesn't offer much offensively.

Zephir has let the game come to him, so a better rating follows, right? He can shoot if that's what you want him to do.

Two things:

Any stat analysis that thinks Zephir is better than Anthony, and that Kyle isn't one of our best players is highly suspect. Other advanced analytics think Kyle is our best player largely because he is far and away our best defender.

Other than those two (fatal) flaws, it passes the eye test. It also demonstrates how critical Freeman's health is for our team going forward.

Different position and not nearly as important as a shot blocking center but Kingz is a man to man lock down defender

Would be nice to see stats when we have a full team. (currently only 2-3 games). JJ missed our first 4 easiest opponents where we stat padded. He first games back was Houston/Kansas/Iowa St. without Freeman.

Donnie Freeman is only back for 2 games in a full team setting. However, he is in the Top Spot and his presence will make everyone better.

I think we could look at these stats at end of the month and see results. Both Freshman (Anthony & White) have been subs, put into starting roles and subs again. That is hard for anyone, let alone freshmen as they are usually inconsistent.

These stats taken without context are useless. Give a bigger pool of data when all players are available is a better way to see where we stand.

IMHO, if we could hit a higher percentage of WIDE OPEN 3S, we would be better. My biggest gripe with this team is that particular issues. We have missed so many wide open 3s (everyone) after a great swing pass, penetration and dish, etc.. I truly believe, (even with our FT issues), we would at most have 2 loses. (Win Houston, Hofstra and Clemson if we have better results with WO3==>Wide Open 3s our WOE)
