This fits in more than one thread so I decided to give it its own. The coach we are supposedly wooing (Frost) was thought to also be of prime interest to Maryland. The defensive coordinator of Michigan now may be the top target of Maryland. If that is who Maryland goes with, do we get Frost and will Harbaugh hire one of his former DCs - none other than FHCSS?

if we could get Eddie O as our DC, thats pretty much a perfect scenario.

would be great for him to lock some doors in Ann Arboe

What kind of defense does he run?
None. Eddie O has never been a DC. He has been a RC but usually D Line RC.
If we came here, which I doubt, he would most likely be DL/RC/AHC.

Just because he's never been a DC before doesn't mean this couldn't be his first shot at it.

If he wanted to stay a DL coach then he'd just stay in the south. Any SEC team would take him in a heartbeat for that role.

By we could offer him his first DC role which he might feel he needs on his way back to being a HC again.

I don't see it happening either, but that's our only play.

He would have to accept first, and if history is any indication, he wouldn't accept a DC position.

I thought Ed O was the DC at USC during the Kiffin years?

He was just the DL/RC

Today's Washington Post makes it sound like DJ Durkin (the Michigan DC) is Maryland's guy. He has already met with them.

Even if Eddie O was willing to come to Syracuse and serve as our DC, why would we want this? He has never been an X and O guy and has no experience or knowledge here. The guy is a great recruiter and DL coach. Maybe he could be successful as a HC if he was given a budget to hire a very good staff featuring a top notch OC and DC. We just experienced what happens when you hire a coordinator with no major college OC experience. Do we really have to go there that pain again?

I really get the feeling we have our guy and his last name begins with an not an O.

Here's hoping its -leck then. Call me crazy but I want a guy that has been a HC and has NE ties.

I do not understand the board's obsession with Eddie O. What has he ever done to say, "wow"!

Yes, he can recruit, but I would so much rather have Daoust running the defense than Eddie O. Also, no way Eddie O comes here for any title other than HC IMO.

You nailed it with the recruit part. People want to have that stud recruiter at the school. Would love to see Daoust running the offense. Given time whats to say Acosta wouldn't be our stud recruiter (if retained)

Agreed...there is probably a reason (or 10) why he's never been a DC.

He's turned down DC jobs. He loves to recruit an teach DL.

"Offense"?

And you know this how?

If his ultimate job is to be a HC, why would he turn down DC jobs? Makes zero sense.

He got a HC job without it before. My apologies that I don't have the articles handy that I've read where he has turned down DC jobs in the past. So yeah his path was different then the normal ones, so yeah makes sense.

I'm not as huge a fan of Fleck personally as he rescinded a bunch of WMU incoming recruits' offers just days after NLI leaving them with nowhere to go. Pretty shitty move imo. He also instituted a stadium DJ at WMU and a mantra of "rowing the boat". Wonder who he got that from.

Wasn't implying your post didn't make sense but rather, EO's career path decision(s) make no sense.

You mentioned that he secured a HC gig without coordinator experience previously...how did that turn out?

I'm just saying that he obviously could have used more complex OJT (i.e. DC) than being a position coach. Football is actually a pretty complicated game with many moving parts. If any coach's ultimate career goal is to become a HC, why not do yourself a favor and learn as a coordinator?

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many position coaches, without any coordinator experience, have become successful HC's?

Put me in the camp that doesn't want a HC who has never served as an OC or DC.

That's why I don't want him as our HC.

But if you're a guy who can recruit good enough players then you can probably run a good enough D.

People want Daoust to be our DC. Has he ever done it? Or recruited as well as Orgeron?
